Audubon Society Set to Start the 117th Christmas Bird Count

December 11, 2016 By Lonnie Davidson Leave a Comment

The annual Christmas bird count will begin on December 14th.

Starting on December 14th, nature enthusiasts will be able to participate in the National Audobon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count. This year will mark the 117 season of the event since it was first started.

The event is more organized than just having anyone out on a stroll throughout the country to count the number of birds they spot. More specifically, the Christmas Bird Count includes day-long outings across the country. The volunteers, professional bird watchers, and conservation experts will cover 15-mile wide circles.

The participants will be split into groups of different sized with one person in every group which will be the official compiler of all the birds seen or even heard by the group throughout the day. If you’re interested in participating in this year’s Christmas Bird Count, you should know that the event’s organizers do not require that volunteers have any previous birdwatching experience. They can participate in any number of counts throughout the entire period the event takes place.

The Christmas Bird Count is now an established annual tradition in the US for environmental and conservation groups as well as nature enthusiasts. The event first began in 1900 as an environmentally friendly and social alternative to the large-scale hunting events which were prevalent throughout the country. At that time, conservationists feared that those events would lead to very low populations of birds in the US, and decided to raise awareness through a new, more peaceful and safe event.

The annual Christmas count was first started by ornithologist Frank Chapman. He hoped to bring communities together in the interest in preserving nature and for science purposes while reducing the number of participants from bird hunts. Now, the event also serves to provide important data to ornithological researchers in the US.

Over the years, the Christmas bird count has developed into a massive event which provides some of the most extensive and geographically diverse data sets for research in American ornithology. The information collected by the volunteers helps researchers determine the decline and increases of particular species of birds, the population of birds in certain areas, their geographical shifts in winter ranges, as well as a variety of other indicators for the state of birds in the US.

New Microsoft Chatbot Released on Kik

December 6, 2016 By Lonnie Davidson Leave a Comment

Zo is the new Microsoft chatbot released on Kik.

Microsoft’s first experience with the AI-driven chatbot known as Tay, which was released on Twitter, did not end well. Users on the platform somehow managed to transform the once innocent Microsoft chatbot into an entity spreading white supremacist propaganda. Now the company has released on Kik a new chatbot called Zo.

Microsoft seems to be keen on testing what they have learned from the experiences of Tay, but the company does not seem confident enough to release Zo on a major messaging platform. Kik has around 250 million registered users in total, with no information regarding the messaging platform’s monthly active users, being one of the lesser-known services.

The Microsoft chatbot was first discovered by Tom Hounsell, a Twitter user and was later written up by MSPoweruser. Zo appears to be the English version bot of Xiaoice, which is Microsoft’s Chinese bot. They both behave in similar ways such as attempting to start conversations with various users, asking simple questions like what seasons you prefer, or whether you enjoy backpacking overseas more than visiting a theme park.

The chatbots are part of Microsoft’s efforts to analyze how real users interact with them. The company seems to be promoting the idea that the next computing platform will consist of conversations with automated partners.

However, Microsoft’s first experiences have not been very successful. Even Zo doesn’t seem much of a conversationalist, as the dialogue with real users is quickly derailed into something that doesn’t make much sense. Although it just may need some to gradually learn as it talks with more people. Hopefully, Zo will not become radicalized as Tay, though as the news about its presence on the messaging platform spreads, users who will want to troll Microsoft are sure to appear.

Overall, Zo identifies as a 22-year-old woman and seems to have been designed to avoid very polarizing topics such as the 2016 US presidential election or politics in general. Any attempts to turn the conversation into that direction will either Zo change the topic or just express his disinterest.

What do you think about the new Microsoft chatbot? Do you really think that we will talk with automated conversation partners in the future instead of with other people?

Teva Pharm Announces Medical Marijuana Inhaler

December 1, 2016 By Lonnie Davidson Leave a Comment

Teva will distribute the world’s first marijuana inhaler in Israel.

Marijuana is steadily becoming accepted by the general public as a recreational drug. Even pharmaceutical companies are trying to develop new ways to administer the drug for medicinal purpose. Toda, Teva Israel has announced a new agreement with Syqe Medical for the marketing of the world’s first marijuana inhaler.

Teva Israel, a subsidiary of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries will be the exclusively in charge of distributing in Israel the marijuana inhaler and its cartridges produced by Syqe Medical. The agreement also states that both companies will fund an instruction and support array for medical staff as well as patients.

A recent report reveals that in 2017, Israel had a number of 26,000 licenses for the medical use of cannabis. It also estimates this number will very likely double by the end of 2018, with the average marijuana user spends around $1,000 per year. These figures indicate that the collaboration between the two companies will prove very lucrative for both.

Until now, patients who smoked marijuana for various medicinal purposes like alleviating pain were not able to properly regulate the dosage. The new marijuana inhaler is an efficient solution to this problem by allowing patients to inhale the optimal dosage required to ease their pain.

The inhaler will also be designed for a variety of patients and their different diseases, while taking into consideration the indication of the Israeli Ministry of Health. The marijuana inhaler has already been tested regularly for half of year in the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa. This makes it the first hospital in the world to officially use marijuana for medical treatments.

The marijuana inhaler will feature biodegradable cartridges which will be marketed and distributed through Teva’s network of doctors, nurses, pain clinics and pharmacies while maintaining the company’s high pharmaceutical standards.

The inhaler is the first one of its kind as it is able to properly control the dosage of medicinal plants, thus assuring the precision and safety of a regular drug. The inhaler successfully passed several clinical trials showing that it meets the standards of the industry.

However, as useful as it may be, the marijuana inhaler is still not as cool as rolling up a joint yourself and smoking it. It remains to be seen how popular it will become in the coming months.

Google Cast name replaced with the Chromecast built-in branding.

If you’re confused about the current name of the Google’s media streaming devices, then you’re not the only one. The company most popular hardware product, the Chromecast and other apps part of the media ecosystem was rebranded under the Cast name. Now, Google seems to have decided to revert back to their old brand name.

Google has begun in the last few weeks to gradually shift from the Google cast branding back to Chromecast. This change not only applies to their direct line of hardware and software products, but to that of associated third-party products from Toshiba and Vizio as well. More specifically, Google has started to increasingly refer to their media streaming technology ecosystem as “Chromecast built-in.” Of course, this change also applied to marketing and public relations affairs. Most notably, Google recently renamed its Twitter account from @googlecast to @chromecast.

However, a number of associated Google sites, among which even the Android TV page, still mention the Google Cast branding. The name was associated for a long time with the Chromecast APIs for various developers.  The initial rebranding from Chromecast to Google Cast of the whole ecosystem took place in March 2016.  In a Google blog post, the company stated that the new brand name better reflects the fact that the Google cast technology is supported by various devices including Chromecast, TVs, speakers, and other displays.

The return to the original branding is bound to create a new wave of confusion among users, a fact which was made many industry experts question why the change of heart from Google. The company did not make any official announcement, but a spokesperson for the company told Engadget that the Chromecast branding allows users identify the devices and technology that they are already familiar with and come to appreciate. Additionally, the official switch of the entire ecosystem of hardware and software won’t place until 2017.

With this recent change, it seems that Google has to improve on its branding skills, especially since the mother company is now officially called Alphabet. However, for many users, even those familiar with the company’s change in structure, still call it Google.

Are you Google Cast/Chromecast user? What do you think about this new Chromecast built-in rebranding?

PlayStation Vue Available on Apple TV

Playstation Vue is finally available on Apple TV.

Cable TV seems to be in a freefall since more and more companies have released their own TV streaming service. Despite the hopes of many users, Apple has not done so and might never start their own streaming service. However, if you own a fourth-generation Apple TV you can download the PlayStation Vue app for all your TV needs.

PlayStation Vue offers a wide variety of live television channels such as AMC, Discovery, HBO, ESPN, Showtime, and many more. It will include all of its standard features like cloud DVR and the option for multiple simultaneous streams. Sony has stated that the app will also work with the Siri remote feature.

Sony’s streaming service was initially only available on Sony products like their very popular gaming console or smart TVs. However, the company has started to expand the service’s reach by bringing to more platforms. Back in October, the service arrived on Android TV, while in November it was released on the web for both Mac and PC users. With its addition on Apple TV, Sony has managed to fulfill the requests of many users.

In the TV streaming market, Sony faces competition from Dish’s Sling TV, AT&T’s upcoming DirectTV, as well as Hulu’s live TV service. The company is focusing on the unique feature set and the user experience it provides during the promotion of the service, which serves as the main difference between the other services. Although the service recently lost support from all Viacom channels, Sony is still confident that it can compete and even edge out the rival services.

Besides the Cloud DVR, which is an extremely useful feature, allowing to record your shows directly on the cloud for later viewing, PlayStation Vue can also run on multiple devices from the same account. This is very advantageous for larger families who want to watch different shows on their own device. Vue allows up to five simultaneous streams while Sling TV allows for only three at once on its best service plan.

Vue will offer three different pricing options depending on how many channels you want to have. However, the availability of some live channels like NBC, ESPN, and Fox, will depend on your location.

Hack Exposes Over 412 Million Accounts on the Friend Finder Network

Friend Finder Network hack exposes over 412 million accounts on various websites,

It seems that hackers have been hard at work yet again. The Friend Finder Network which includes sites like AdultFriendFinder, Penthouse, Cams.com, Stripshow, and others, has been hacked. This has led to the exposure of more than 412 million accounts.

The Friend Finder Network is a company which operates various adults-only services. According to Leaked Source, the company has been hacked in October for the second time in two years. The breach exposed a varying number of accounts on each of the company’s sites.

Almost 340 million accounts were breached solely on Adultfriendfinder.com which claims that it is the world’s largest sex & swinger community. Over 62 million accounts were hacked on Cams.com, slight more than 7 million on Penthouse, 1.4 million on Stripshow.com, 1.1 million on iCams.com as well as around 35,000 for an unknown domain.

The gigantic number of hacked accounts makes this the largest data breach in 2017 as well as in the history of the internet. The MySpace hack is close second with 360 million.  The Ashley Madison hack, a similar site also involved in the sex and dating industry but more controversial, exposed 42 million accounts. Leaked Source has decided not to make the leaked data sets available to general public as of yet, after much internal deliberation.

The Leaked Source report tells us that the hack was perpetrated using a Local File Inclusion exploit. The breach apparently happened in the same month as when researchers warned the Friend Finder network about this type of vulnerability. Additionally, the company made a number of other security mistakes that led to this situation.

The company either hashed passwords using a weak SHA1 algorithm or it stored them in plaintext without any type of protection. Additionally, the Friend Finder Network also kept log-in information for the Penthouse site despite having been sold to another company. To make matters worse, it even kept the passwords of over 15 million users who deleted their accounts.

If you had an account on any of the affected sites you should immediately change your password. You should do so with more urgency if you used the same password for all your important accounts.

What do you think about this new data breach? Were you ever affected by one?

4 Symptoms That Mask Serious Underlying Conditions

November 8, 2016 By Lonnie Davidson Leave a Comment

man holding his chest tight
man holding his chest tight

Some aches are a cover for more serious underlying conditions.

The current health care system sometimes makes it so complicated to perform a routine check, that most people prefer to ignore small symptoms, writing them off as being consequences of their daily activities or a sleepless night. However, some aches and sores mask more than just a pulled muscle, as sometimes a seemingly insignificant ache can hide more serious underlying conditions.

Some Pains Hide Serious Underlying Conditions

Most people learn to live with a small lower leg pain, blaming it on traffic or uncomfortable sleeping positions. Unfortunately, there are times when aches conceal serious underlying conditions, a preventive medical consult drawing the line between life and death.

Here are the most common 4 symptoms that should never be ignored as they almost always enshroud serious underlying conditions.

Wheezing

Breathing problems should never be ignored. Doctors are recommending patients that notice a whistling sound when they breathe to immediately contact their health care provider.

Wheezing can be caused by a lung disease, asthma, allergies, or even a long exposure to chemicals. It can also be a sign of bronchitis or pneumonia, so if you or your loved ones experience this symptom, it is important to see a physician as soon as possible.

Blood in Urine

Usually, blood is never a good sight as the healthy human body isolates its blood supply well. As in the case of oil leaking from damaged motors, blood appearing in places it should not is always a distress sign.

There are more than one factors that can cause blood to mix with urine and escape the body through the bladder.

Bloody urine combined with back or side pain is the warning sign that you might struggle with kidney stones.

If the bloody urine is accompanied by a burning sensation when you visit the toilet considerably more often than usual, then you might want to check if you have a urinary or kidney infection.

However, the worst symptom of them all is blood in the urine that is not accompanied by any kind of pain or burning sensation. Usually, this is the first sign of kidney or bladder cancer.

Lower Leg Tenderness or Pain

A feeling of tenderness or pain in the back of the lower leg often hides deep vein thrombosis.

DVT often occurs after a person sits still for extended periods of time. Usually, the affected limb is more tender than the other. Furthermore, the foot tends to swollen and have a reddish color.

While it is normal to feel your legs a little tender after exercising, redness and heat are a sign of distress, and you should contact your doctor immediately as the blood clot that is causing the symptoms can get dislodged at travel to the brain where it can cause strokes.

Weakness in the Limbs

The first sign of stroke is a weakness sensation in the limbs. A person experiencing a stroke often feels like his or her hands go numb. Some people even reported feeling like their face was going numb.

A stroke can manifest itself in many ways. Some people feel like their arms and legs are too weak or heavy to move, others might have trouble keeping their balance or feel dizzy.

If you or your loved ones experience an intense headache followed or accompanied by weakness in the limbs, a general state of confusion, and troubles speaking than immediately call 911.

The effects of a stroke can be reversed if the condition is caught early enough. According to specialists, if the patient receives clot-buster treatment in the first four and half hours after experiencing the first symptoms, he or she has considerably lower chances of suffering from long-term consequences.

Instapaper Premium is Now Available for Free

November 2, 2016 By Lonnie Davidson 1 Comment

Instapaper app on iPad
Instapaper app on iPad

Instapaper Premium features are now available for free.

According to a recent announcement, the popular and very useful reading app, Instapaper will renounce its monthly subscription. As a direct consequence, all users, new and old, are able to access the Instapaper premium features for free.

In case you are not familiar with Instapaper or any of its premium features, you should know that that the app consists of a simple yet versatile tool used to save web pages for later reading, even in offline modes.

Before the recent announcement, Instapaper premium features like full-text article searches, speed-reading, ad-free browsing, and more, were locked behind a monthly subscription costing $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year. The main reason for the paywall was because the app needed the funds to support itself. However, its business plans as well as its future prospects changed when the company was acquired by Pinterest in August.

This merger allowed the app to have more resources and could build a larger user base by offering all of its features to anyone for no cost at all. Pinterest required that most of the Instapaper team begin work at improving the overall core experience of Pinterest. However, the Instapaper app will still exist as a separate software which will continue to receive updates on certain intervals.

With Instapaper Premium going free, this makes it more appealing to new users as well as to the customers of its main competitor, Pocket, which offers a very similar service. However, at this point, it is unclear how Instapaper will develop in the future, but at least it focus on improving the user experience without worrying about a new business plan.

During its history, the app has gone through a number of monetization models such as free but with ads, paid only, optional subscription and other variants under two different owners, the founder of the app and Betaworks. At this point, Pinterest has stated that it doesn’t have any plans to share for now in regards to the monetization of the app. With no ads, it’s hard to see how the app will make any money for Pinterest if they don’t implement any monetization options in the near future.

Top 10 Foods Recommended for Diabetics

October 29, 2016 By Lonnie Davidson 1 Comment

salmon with a side dish of asparagus
salmon with a side dish of asparagus

Salmon and asparagus are among the most recommended foods for diabetics.

Diabetes is labeled as a nutritional disease, meaning that it is tightly related to the food that the patients eat. By consuming foods recommended for diabetics, patients find it easier to maintain a steady blood sugar level, thus reducing the need to resort to medication. This article will provide you with a list of ten foods that doctors recommend to patients diagnosed with both type 1 and 2 diabetes.

  1. Apples

Apples have a reputation of keeping you healthy. A new study, albeit partially funded by the US Apple Association, found that eating an apple on a daily basis decreases LDL cholesterol levels by up to 40 percent.

Moreover, a Harvard study found that the Adamic fruit reduces a person’s chances of developing type II diabetes by 23 percent.

The forbidden fruit is also rich in fiber, a medium-sized apple containing approximately 3 grams of both insoluble and soluble fibers.

  1. Cinnamon

The spice is not just a herald of the winter season. Cinnamon also has the ability to make our body respond better to insulin. A recent study discovered that diabetics who were treated with different amounts of cinnamon extract showed a significant reduction in sudden spikes in blood sugar levels.

The researchers administered approximately half a tablespoon of cinnamon to the patients, integrating it in various meals.

Keep in mind that the season must be added into a drink or food item as it can cause suffocation if it is consumed in its raw form.

  1. Asparagus

Apart from being a chef’s favorite when it comes to aesthetically pleasing side dishes, asparagus is filled with glutathione, an antioxidant known to counteract the effects of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and even aging.

According to a 2012 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, asparagus increases insulin production and helps in maintaining steady blood sugar levels.

Additionally, the miracle vegetable contains folates, which are recommended by the American Heart Association because they lower the levels of homocysteine.

  1. Avocado

Due to its monounsaturated fats, avocado is the heart’s favorite. Moreover, the Academy of Dietetics and Nutrition found that the soft fruit improves the level of cholesterol and diminishes the risk of heart disorders.

Furthermore, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition mentioned in a 2008 study that women who eat avocados on a regular basis have 25 percent fewer chances of developing type II diabetes.

Even though it is a fruit, experts recommend that people should treat avocados more like a fatty ingredient that can be smashed and turned into guacamole, or added to salads or sandwiches.

  1. Blueberries

Every fruit that contains flavonoids is good for the heart. In addition, the high fiber content of blueberries lessens the risk pf cognitive decline and diabetes. They also keep blood sugar in check and have been proved to have a significant effect in inhibiting the growth of cancerous tumors.

Anthocyanins, the blueberries’ main antioxidant ingredient, have been recently linked to a low type II diabetes risk.

Only two servings per day can reduce the chance of developing the disease with more than 20 percent.

  1. Carrots

According to popular belief, carrots increase visual acuity. However, the American Diabetes Association only discovered a link between baby carrots and diabetes. Due to their low carb content, baby carrots are “free food,” meaning that they do not count as a meal.

The perfect snack, carrots are also rich in beta-carotene and vitamin A. The first has been scientifically proven to lower the chances of developing type II diabetes in people who have a genetic predisposition to the disease, while the latter helps in building a stronger immune system.

Experts recommend the vegetables in both their raw and cooked form.

  1. Broccoli

The enemy of most children, broccoli is often categorized as a superfood. The non-starchy vegetable contains more vitamin C per 100 grams than the poster fruit of vitamin C, oranges. Moreover, just like carrots, it is rich in beta-carotene, an antioxidant that we already know is of great help for diabetics.

Furthermore, broccoli contains high levels of glucosinolates, a group of sulfur-containing compounds known for their anticancer effects, and for their capacity of decreasing the risk of heart disease.

Cruciferous vegetables have been tied to longevity, cardiovascular health, and lower cancer risk.

Broccoli can be served both raw and cooked. It can be dipped in hummus or guacamole, or cooked in the oven. Keep in mind that the vegetable should not be over-cooked as the stem should have a crunchy consistency and the inflorescence must remain green.

  1. Fish

The Official American Dietary Guidelines recommends a fish dish at least twice a week. Fish is the only meat that is low in unhealthy cholesterol and fats, while also packing plenty of omega 3.

The American Heart Association found a link between regular fish consumption and a diminished risk of arrhythmias. Omega 3 fats are also efficient in reducing the levels of triglycerides, slowing atherosclerotic plaque growth rate, curbing inflammation, and reducing blood pressure levels.

Experts recommend fatty fish like mackerel, halibut, trout, tuna, sardines, herring, and salmon. While salmon and trout are delicious when cooked in the oven, sardines and herring are tastier when they grilled.

  1. Melon

One of the biggest inconveniences for diabetics is their inability to appease their sweet tooth. Most fruits, except for berries, are too rich in fructose to be well tolerated by a patient’s body, so the possibility of indulging themselves with a sweet treat is basically inexistent.

Luckily, melons are packed with nutrients, every type being helpful in its own way.

Honeydew

A single serving of honeydew contains about half of the daily recommended dose of vitamin C. Moreover, the melon does not contain many calories, so it is the perfect sweet snack, offering a sensation of fullness, but without the added calories.

The best way to make sure that you choose the perfect honeydew is to pick up only those who are slightly fragrant and don’t feature any soft spots or bruises.

Cantaloupe

Honeydew and cantaloupe are closely related. While the first is rich in Vitamin C, the latter is filled with both Vitamin C and A. The American Diabetes Association found that the fruit is helpful in preventing macular degeneration.

A ripe cantaloupe emits a powerful sweet odor, and it feels heavy.

Watermelon

Watermelon is a major source of lycopene, an antioxidant that protects the heart and staves off cancer. It is also a great source of hydration, and its sugary taste helps in tricking the brain when it is craving for sweets.

  1. Tea

While coffee is an American’s beverage of choice, and the US has a complicated history with tea, the British were on to something when they started to include the drink in their daily routines.

Tea is rich in catechins which dilate blood vessels, preventing blood pressure levels to rise. The beverage also lowers stress and improves the level of both types of cholesterol.

A new ADA study shows that both black and green tea have similar effects, the paper recommending the consumption of up to five cups of tea on a daily basis.

Caution is advised in the case of bottled teas as they can do more harm than good in the case of diabetics. Usually, bottles teas are filled with added sugars that can cause a spike in blood sugar levels.

Apart from these, nutritional experts also recommend yogurt, apple cider vinegar, black beans, spinach, red peppers, soy, raspberries, red grapefruit, red pepper, quinoa, nuts, oatmeal, garlic, kale, flax seeds, black beans, and red berries.

As you can tell, there are plenty of delicious foods recommended for diabetics, so being diagnosed with the disease doesn’t necessarily mean that you will not be able to indulge with flavorful gastronomic delights.

Kodak Ektra Smartphone Officially Revealed

October 21, 2016 By Lonnie Davidson Leave a Comment

Kodak Ektra camera
Kodak Ektra camera

The Kodak Ektra smartphone has been revealed.

The title of the smartphone with the best camera is highly fought over between Apple, Google’s new Pixel phone, Samsung and other companies. However, now a new participant is throwing its hat into the ring. The new Kodak Ektra has been officially released which is specially designed for photography enthusiasts.

The new Kodak Ektra, currently being released in the UK and eventually in all Europe for $550, was previously teased at the start of the month. It tries to appeal to Kodak camera fans and photography-oriented smartphone users by basic its design on an iconic device from the company’s long history, the 1941 Ektra camera.

According to the Kodak’s CEO, Jeff Clarke, the company has a very rich history in imaging technology and seeks to apply to a smartphone. The Kodak Ektra is a testament to the ongoing commitment of the company to bringing the latest developments in photography to more modern devices. The latest reincarnation of the 1941 camera provides users many creative opportunities and the proper instrument to immortalize them.

Like the previous 2015 smartphone from the Kodak brand, the Ektra will be built by the Bullitt Group. The company makes smartphones for various brands and using a variety of tech and components to create unique devices. In the case of Kodak Ektra, they have included a 21 MP sensor from Sony, a MediaTk MT6797 Helo X20 deca-core complemented by the ARCSOFT night shot tech.

The design of the phone is inspired from the Ektra 1941 camera. The back camera lens is larger than on standard phones, and it intentionally sticks out. It also includes an old-school physical shutter. The base of the case is rounded similar to the way film-based camera were.

Kodak Ektra will initially run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. However, users will potentially be able to upgrade to newer version of Google’s OS. The most impressive software feature of the phone is the camera app which features an old-school wheel with various settings and functions. A phone that just takes amazing pictures wouldn’t be much if it doesn’t have the capacity to actually display in all their beauty. Fortunately, Kodak Ektra features a 5-inch 1080p display with 32GB internal storage, expandable to 128GB with a microSD.

It remains to be seen how well the Kodak Ektra manages to grab the attention of an already nice market of smartphone photo enthusiasts.
