You should know that if you want to dry your hands in a public bathroom hand dryer you are most likely exposing yourself to an entire colony of bacteria and other things. According to a new study, which the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology recently published, hand dryers are actually very dangerous because they are blowing the bacteria back to you. In order to reach this shocking conclusion, the team of experts bought plates of bacteria cultures into the bathrooms of 36 men and women. These bathrooms were located at an academic health center.
Their idea was to expose these plates to the air that was blown from some hot air dryers for 30 seconds. After doing this, the team noticed that 18 to 60 colonies of bacteria grew on each plate. Most of them would have been able to cause serious diseases in humans. A solution to partially deal with the problem was to install HEPA filters, but this only reduced the number of bacteria by four times. However, it did not completely remove it. It’s very interesting that many past studies came up with similar results, so there must be some truth to this.
Bathroom hand dryers are dangerous for humans
As everybody probably already knows, bathrooms are not the cleanest of places. And having something that blows air in there inevitably means having something that also blows bacteria. And when public bathrooms don’t have paper towels, you have to stay with all those microbes on your hands. Having a hand dryer in a bathroom is like having a leaf blower that suck in bacteria, viruses and even feces particles, and then blows them back up.
So, if you want to avoid this mess, give up on using hand dryers and simply wipe your hands after washing them. It’s far more hygienic and will leave your hands clean afterwards.
