We are used to seeing recalls when it comes to dairy products and meat. This time the recalled product is dog food. While it is unusual to see this type of event, it is not the first time this happens. Blue Buffalo decided to recall their dog food named Blue Wilderness Rocky Mountain Red Meat.
Why Did The Company Recall The Dog Food?
Blue Buffalo, a company that was based in Connecticut has voluntarily decided to retract one of their products from the market. They made this decision after they found that it contained a high level of beef thyroid hormones. Despite the fact that this can occur sometimes, the company believed that it was best to issue this retraction before anything bad happens.
Blue Buffalo announced their recall on March 17th. The code of the dog food product is 840243101153. After they announced the retraction of the product, the company also advised pet owners to look for symptoms. Dogs that have eaten this product, or any other that had high levels of beef thyroid hormones experience certain reactions.
Some of the symptoms they might have include higher heart rate, weight loss, restlessness, and an increased thirst. Once the dog stops eating products that have high levels of beef thyroid hormones, the symptoms can disappear. If this doesn’t happen, pet owners are advised to take their dogs to the doctor.
This recall took after a dog was affected by the product. The pet is ok now. Blue Buffalo continues its investigation despite the fact that the animal has recovered and that they made the recall. They want to see which caused the beef thyroid hormone levels to increase so much.
People who have purchased the dog food need to take the product back to the store where they bought it. They will get a full refund for it. The company mentioned that this is the only product affected.
Blue Buffalo have recalled other products in the past. More than 10 years ago, the company was working with American Nutrition Inc. After the FDA reported melamine in the products made by American Nutrition, Blue Buffalo ceased using products from that company. In 2015, the company recalled a lot of chew bones. They had harmful salmonella levels.
