To be honest, living in an increasingly connected world can have some awesome perks – like the fridge that has a camera inside letting you know if you need to make a stop at the supermarket – but other times, it’s downright creepy and on the brink of privacy invasion.
According to Spanish mattress manufacturers Durmet, “the global infidelity crisis knocks on your door,” because there are so many ways to meet new people nowadays. So what are you going to do if you suspect your partner is cheating on you?
Naturally, you will buy the $1,750 Smarttress to keep tabs on them without their knowledge. Or at least, that’s what Durmet seems to believe is the perfect solution.
The Smarttress is an Internet-connected mattress that comes with a companion app that sends data to the smartphone user with impacts per minute detected by vibration sensors.
After it failed to garner enough interest in a connected mattress for babies, the Spanish company hopes to attract consumers with what seems to be one of the major plagues of the 21st century – how to combat infidelity.
According to the oddly dramatic promotional video, the new mattress comes with a killer feature: a “Lover Detection System” that will alert you every time it detects “suspicious” or “questionable” activity.
Having twenty-four ultrasonic sensors incorporated in the springs, the mattress can detect various movements on multiple contact zones. But the smart mattress gets creepy as it can provide more than just some alerts.
The ad shows that you can have data like bedtime analytics sent to your phone, metrics like speedometer or “intensity and impact per minute.” That makes you not just a paranoid partner that goes and buys smart mattresses, but also a spying partner that monitors their… performance.
This is not by far the first connected device that can keep tabs on bedroom activity or sex life, but the Smarttress is certainly one of the first designed to be used without the consent of the partner; that would defy the purpose completely.
Even if you ignore the privacy and trust issues that come with the device, there’s also the scenario where the bed runs out of batteries at an inopportune time, leaving you with a very expensive yet generic mattress.
And, let’s be honest, if you even thought about buying this mattress, your relationship could stand some more open communication between you and your spouse without the help of a spying bed.
