It seems that a new game has taken the internet world by storm. The so-called “condom-snorting challenge” is a new and very dangerous practice that young people have been doing for years. It is part of the same category of challenges as the Tide pod challenge or the cinnamon challenge. The doer needs to stuff a condom up one side of the nose, then cover the other nostril and inhale until the condom slides to the throat. The final step is to reach after it and pull it from your mouth. If it sounds meaningless and dangerous that’s because it really is.
According to Stephen Enriquez, a state education specialist in San Antonio, drugs come in all shapes and sizes. Finally, it’s all a matter of preventing children from reaching the extremes. He recently visited a school to warn teachers and parents about the dangers of not only drugs, but these online challenges as well. Everything teenagers are doing today has one purpose: to gather as many likes, views and shares as possible. Experts are saying that the only thing people should snort is air, apart from prescribed medications.
The dangerous “condom-snorting challenge”
It’s very easy for this challenge to become fatal as a condom can easily become stuck in your lungs or nose. There have been numerous cases of people inhaling condoms and ending up in hospital in severe condition. Back in 2004, a woman unintentionally sucked a condom which ended up in her throat. This caused pneumonia and the right upper lobe of her lung collapsed. In another case, a woman accidentally swallowed a condom and a part of it ended up in her appendix. This triggered appendicitis and she underwent surgery. However, these cases were accidents.
It’s hard to imagine that anyone would deliberately snort a condom, but teenagers nowadays are doing it for fun and likes. This is why health experts are warning parents and teachers about this dark side of social media.
