You may hate those eye glasses, as they are a responsibility you no longer want in your life. You must clean them, you must watch out as they need to always be safe from scratches or breaks, you need to constantly clean them and on top of it all, you always have those metallic or plastic pieces that cover your pretty face. It might look intellectual and interesting at first, but as time passes, wearing eye glasses becomes unnerving.
For most individuals, the best alternative to eye glasses are contact lenses but as a new study suggests, contact lens wearers are putting themselves at risk of serious eye infections after neglecting basic hygiene rules. So, contact lenses are not a great alternative, after all.
The study has involved 1000 adults that were questioned about their hygiene habits. The Centers for Disease and Prevention found that 82% of wearers kept their contact lenses for longer than recommended. Of course they did, as that deadline cannot wait for us to change or clean our eye lenses. Those long working hours make us forget about our eyes, our minds, our bodies, our life outside the office walls.
All wearers must however be aware that using contact lenses longer than directed by the product instructions or the ophthalmologist can lead to complications and a lot of discomfort. People are advised to always consult their doctors about the most suitable time to replace contact lenses. Also, they cannot be worn for long durations throughout a day. Even if they are gas permeable, contact lenses restrict oxygen from reaching the eyes.
As statistics show, approximately 41 million people in the US are wearing contact lenses and almost each individual does something wrong. The thin layers which upgrade your vision allow for germs spread in the eyes, as that synthetic layer that makes your sight better doesn’t necessarily keep the eye tissue clean.
Contact lens solution cannot be reused under any circumstance. A third of contact lens users admit to have reused the solution. Bacteria and fungus find the perfect home in that liquid so reuse must be strongly avoided! The contact lens case must be cleaned with fresh liquid after each and every use.
Hands must be washed before touching the eyes and tap water must be avoided when it comes to your contact lenses.
