We all know that fruits and vegetables are contaminated with pesticides. The difference is in their degree of contamination. Some might have a higher level of contamination while others have lower levels. The fruits that have the highest levels of contamination are strawberries.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is the one that conducts studies every year to test out fruits and vegetables. They measure the levels of pesticides found in every crop. They discovered that strawberries have the highest concentration of pesticides. The second place is occupied by spinach.
In order to conduct this study, researchers tested 36,000 samples of vegetables and fruits. EWG found that more than 70% of 48 farms produce contaminated crops. The group developed 2 lists. A first one is named Dirty Dozen and it contains the fruits and veggies with the highest levels of contamination. The other list is known as Clean Fifteen and it shows the veggies and fruits with the lowest levels of contamination.
The vegetables and fruits that are the most contaminated with pesticides are strawberries, apples, pears, grapes, tomatoes, potatoes, and celery. On the other hand, the cleanest farm products are avocados, cabbage, papayas, mangoes, cauliflower, grapefruit, and melon. The results show that only 1% of products found in the Clean Fifteen are contaminated with pesticides.
The team of researchers mentioned that fruits and veggies should be found in our diet. They said that we don’t have to stop eating these crops; we just need to eat organic products. Although they might be more expensive, it is better for our health.
Pesticides are known for causing infections. These infections usually are treated with antibiotics. The problem is that our bodies are starting to become immune to antibiotics. This means that our immune system can be affected by products contaminated with pesticides.
The team of researchers that conducted this study said that people shouldn’t be afraid to consume these products because we don’t eat enough fruits and veggies so as to be affected by pesticides. Despite the fact that they have pesticides, the benefits of eating vegetables and fruits is bigger than the effect of the pesticides.
What is your opinion about this study? Did you know that strawberries are contaminated with pesticides?
