If you enjoy using Windows 10’s Cortana virtual assistant, as a way to keep track and manage your daily computer activities, then you’re probably going to be looking forward to the upcoming feature called Suggested Reminders. The feature is finally rolling out after being announced back in January.
The new update and feature for Cortana are sure to polarize some users, as the assistant will take a more proactive role in helping users keep their schedules and promises. The Suggested Reminders feature is only the newest feature to come to the assistant, which Microsoft is keen on improving by making it smarter.
The Suggested Reminders feature is only possible thanks to Microsoft’s machine learning research focused on language. While the feature may seem somewhat simple to understand, for Cortana to understand what a promise is amongst a user’s various statements, requires quite a complicated process such as parsing through different language contexts. This was only possible for the deep-learning capacity of artificial intelligence systems.
According to Microsoft, Cortana’s Suggested Reminders feature will mostly use sent emails for detecting and reminding users of their promises. For example, if you sent an email telling a contact that you will send them a certain document, Cortana will be able to detect that respective promise and ask you if you want to set a reminder for it.
For users interested in such a feature, it’s important to know that Cortana will be able to detect promises made in Outlook emails or in messages sent from the Office 363 school and business accounts. However, Microsoft has stated that support for other email platforms will be coming soon.
While some users may find the feature appealing, especially if they are forgetful, other may find it intrusive and quite frustrating. However, you can easily disable the proactive behavior of Cortana in regards to the Suggested Reminders feature when she first asks you to give your communication consent.
If you want to try out the new feature, you will have to connect your Office 365 or Outlook email to Cortana. However, the update is currently rolling out and might not have reached all PCs as of yet.
