It is not everyday that we meet a person who is as dedicated to the people around themselves as the mayor of Dallas, Mike Rawlings. Rawlings saved the life of a woman who almost choked on a piece of meat on Saturday afternoon.
Helen Mayer luckily found herself at the right place and at the right time when the incident occured. In her statement to News 8 she said that she found herself choking on a piece of fajita meat soon after she had started lunch with her other 8 family members.
Helen only remembers that she stood up turned around trying to gasp for air. But the cries from her table did not go unheard and the mayor hero stepped in tos ave the day. Rawlings came from behind and applied the Heimlich maneuver, ensuring that the threatening piece of fajita would endanger the woman’s life no more.
When the woman regained consciousness she recognised the mayor and thanked him for his brave and kind act. Helen proceeded to call him a hero after what he had done.
Rawlings stated that he had just finished his lunch when he heard that the women were screaming, so he knew that he had little time and needed to act quickly. He said that Ms. Mayer was completely red, she was not breaking and his son thought she was having a heart attack.
Gunnar, the mayor’s son, also mentioned that the women were happy that everything turned out to be. Some of them recognised Rawlings and told Helen that the mayor had saved her life. Everyone proceeded to clap afterwards, as if it were a well written and well executed movie.
When asked how he knew the Heimlich maneuver, Rawlings said that he had learned it as a life guard and Boy Scout. This is not the first person the mayor of Dallas saved. He also helped someone in need approximately 5 years ago.
Gunnar Rawlings said that he and his dad have gone to the restaurant El Felix, where the incident happened, numerous times, but Saturday’s experience was a very important and happy one. Gunnar admitted that this was the happies experience he had lived there and proceeded to tweet about it in the afternoon.
Mike Rawlings is the 61st Mayor of Dallas after having won the Mayoral election back in 2011. Helen Mayer stated that she is very thankful to Rawlings. She called him her “guardian angel” and patted him saying that she would vote for him.
