Parents and teachers, watch out! Apparently, a new internet trend that can turn out to be extremely dangerous: the deodorant challenge. A mother from the United Kingdom felt this herself when her daughter ended up with second-degree burns on her arms because of it. Now, she is sending out a warning to everyone else through a chilling Facebook post about her daughter’s story. The main idea of this challenge is very simple, yet extremely harmful. Someone needs to spray aerosol deodorant directly on someone else’s skin, or on their own. A person can also be challenged to do it on their own.
According to the mother, Jamie Prescott, this new internet challenge is winning ground among children. As for her daughter, she explained that she might need a skin graft because the burns she ended up with were too severe. Since last Friday, when she shared her chilling post, it attracted a lot of attention, gaining over 4,000 shares on the social media platform. In an interview, Prescott said that her daughter, Ellie, got the burns when she met some classmates at a park. They sprayed deodorant on her arm without her even knowing what was happening.
The very dangerous deodorant challenge
Since the incident, she has had medical procedures done on her once a week. Also, Ellie now goes to another school, where children are still trying this new challenge. In recent years, a large number of seemingly absurd challenges have taken the internet by storm, like the Tide Pod or the cinnamon challenge.
At the moment, experts are not sure just how widespread this deodorant challenge actually is. Meanwhile, other parents have followed Prescott’s example and have posted their own stories about this trend. When sprayed on skin, aerosol can cause up to third-degree burns on the person.
