Electronic cigarettes are seen as a healthier alternative to regular cigarettes. Despite this fact, various studies showed that e-cigs can be even more dangerous than normal cigarettes. A new research observed that electronic cigarettes can lead to fat accumulation in the liver. This research was presented at the ENDO 2018, the annual Chicago meeting of the Endocrine Society.
Smoking E-Cigs Could Be Just as Bad
In order to conduct this study, researchers used mice which did not have the gene for apolipoprotein E. This increased their risk for accumulation fat in the liver and for developing heart disease. These mice had a diet high in fat. The mice were divided into 2 groups. The first one was put in a chamber which had electronic cigarettes aerosol. The other group was exposed to a saline aerosol.
The objective of this study was to see the other side-effects of electronic cigarettes. Both regular and electronic cigarettes contain nicotine which is linked to fat accumulation in the liver. Despite this connection, researchers were unable to discover the long-term effects of electronic cigarettes. This is why many researchers mentioned that e-cigs need more research before they can be called a safer alternative to regular cigarettes.
After 12 weeks, when the study was completed, scientists collected liver samples to see if they had been affected by the aerosol. They used a method known as RNA sequence analysis to see the changes in the liver samples. Researchers observed a change in more than 400 genes associated with fat accumulation in the liver.
Another finding of the study was that electronic cigarettes also affect the genes linked to the circadian rhythm. A dysfunction of the circadian rhythm can increase the development of liver disease and other health problems.
Theodore C. Friedman, the leader of the study, mentioned the following:
Our experimental results will provide support to policymakers and federal and state regulatory bodies to take preventive measures to stop the increasing use of e-cigarettes among both children and adults
Bottom line – electronic cigarettes are still a big if. Vaping may seem like a hip social behavior, but its dangers are still to be determined. One thing’s certain, though, smoking nicotine in any form is bad for you.
