The new dietary guidelines released at the beginning of January might not work for your best interest, according to Ken Cook, the president and founder of the Environmental Working Group (EWG). So here are EWG’s dietary guidelines for 2017.
There are a lot of issues that concern dietitians when it comes to the new guidelines. Not only a diet rich in meat is almost encouraged, but a diet rich in plants is almost discouraged. Also, they do not advise people to decrease their sweetened beverages consumption and they do not warn about the high levels of mercury some fish might have.
EWG released its own dietary guidelines, which according to one of the authors, Emily Cassidy, are better not only for the health of the people, but for the environment as well. The people from EWG believe that the health officials didn’t make the right dietary recommendations because the business interest is too high.
Unlike the other dietary guidelines, the EWG guidelines advice people to eat less meat. They advise people to avoid processed and red meat as much as possible. They say that the production of these meats is not only bad for the environment, but they can cause heart disease and cancer. Also, they encourage a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and they advise people to avoid pesticides. According to federal reports, the American eat very little fruits and vegetables, even though they are known to have many benefits. Fruits and vegetables have low calories, are high in fiber, contain a lot of vitamins and minerals, and they can reduce the risks of some diseases. These diseases include heart disease, some cancers and the high blood pressure.
These guidelines also advise the Americans to avoid processed foods, as they contain a lot if harmful chemicals and seafood that has high levels of mercury. The fish that have high levels of omega 3 are highly advised, as they can help reduce the risk of heart disease and lower the levels of cholesterol. EWG recommends diets low in salt, sugar and sweetened beverages. They advise adults to eat maximum 12 teaspoons of sugar per day, and that can be hard when people drink daily soft drinks. A can of soft drink contains up to 10 teaspoons of sugar.
In our opinion, EWG’s dietary guidelines for 2017 offer the best advice regarding diets and a lot of people will benefit if they follow them.
