Nowadays more and more people choose to watch a movie or a play games on the computer, instead of doing outdoors activities. Few people exercise and most of them do it because they want to lose weight or improve their bodies. Even fewer people exercise simply because of the many benefits it can bring to their health. According to the American College of Cardiology journal , exercise decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease.
As heart disease is one of the most common causes of death, this should motivate more people to start exercising. According to the researchers, the amount of time dedicated to exercising is important. If you don’t like to exercise that much, don’t worry as any time dedicated to exercising counts. Apparently, the more you exercise, the lower will be the risks of you developing heart disease. Recent reports showed that only 50% of the Americans meet the national guidelines. These guidelines recommend at least 150 minutes of exercising per week at a moderate intensity or 75 minutes of intense exercising.
For the study, the team of researchers focused on how the intensity of the exercise influenced the health of the heart. They discovered that even low amounts of moderate or intense exercising decreased the risk of mortality. There was no evidence found that too much exercise could harm the heart, as some people are afraid.
One of the researchers involved in the study, Michael Scott Emery said that the public has somehow got the wrong idea that exercise could be dangerous for the heart. This inaccurate idea has pushed people’s attention away from the many benefits exercising has not only on the heart, but on the overall health as well. He also said that clinicians should recommend exercising to their patients. More awareness should be brought on the benefits of working out, as many people’s lifespan could increase and many health problems could be avoided.
According to the experts, the best exercise to prevent cardiovascular disease includes biking, swimming, circuit training and running. They are recommended to be done for at least an hour, three times a week. For a more positive mental outlook, they recommend aerobics.
The results of the research according to which exercise decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease, were published in the latest issue of the American College of Cardiology journal.
