The FDA Wants to Label Nutella As a Spread, Not a Topping

The FDA wants to label Nutella as a spread due to the way Americans eat it.

The FDA has reached the conclusion that the chocolate cream is used by most Americans as a jam instead of a topping and has decided to label Nutella as a spread. The decision comes after several national surveys showed that the US population struggles with obesity. By re-labeling the favorite desert, they will decrease the daily recommended dose of the popular spread by half.

The nutty chocolate delight is momentarily classified as a topping meant to cover scoops of ice cream or crunchy pastry. However, according to recent findings, most Americans prefer to spread Nutella on a piece of toast, replacing fruity jellies or jams.

Before changing all the labels, the FDA first wants to find out how much Nutella Americans eat each day. While it may sound invasive, the question is being asked for serious reasons. According to the US Food Regulations, only one tablespoon of jam is recommended for daily use. Toppings benefit from a double portion.

Since most Americans prefer to serve their Nutella on a piece of toast instead of a bowl of ice cream, the FDA wants the recommended serving size to reflect reality.

Of course, all the fans of the Ferrero treat would opt for the larger size, because you cannot eat just one slice of Nutella bread, but the Government has something else in mind.

The current serving size, two tablespoons of the nutty, chocolaty delight, measures approximately 200 calories and it packs roughly 21 grams of sugar.

However, Nutella is closer to jams than chocolate syrup, marshmallow cream, and frosting regarding how we eat it but is as rich in calories as all the other frostings.

Fruit pastes, fruit chutney, and fruit jellies contain an average of 50 calories per tablespoon. If Nutella is categorized as a jam, then the information on its label would be even harder to decipher. Most nutritionists do not see any good for the change apart from labels being modified, and caloric data being even more cryptic.

The Government is keeping tabs on Americans’ opinion, a special web page being created to find out exactly how much Nutella people are eating on a daily basis.
