According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, any type of raw dough and batter including pizza, bread and cookie dough is a perfect environment for harmful bacteria and toxins to thrive in.
Subsequently, the federal agency advises Americans with an appetite for raw dough to stop consuming it if they plan to stay healthy. Federal researchers found that raw cookie dough may be hazardous to health regardless of whether there are eggs in its composition.
The latest FDA warning was spurred by the E.Coli outbreak tracked back to a General Mill flour plant in Missouri. But the FDA also found traces of Shiga toxin in flour sold in 20 states following several reports related to people who landed in a hospital after having eaten raw dough or batter.
E.Coli was found in General Mills flour produced last fall. The company agreed to voluntarily recall 10 million pounds of potentially contaminated flour. The recalled brands included Gold Medal and Wondra.
On the other hand, it is not the first time flour gets contaminated with E.Coli bacteria. According to a 1993 reports, nearly 13 percent of commercial flour contains the nasty bacteria.
Furthermore, Shiga toxin also plagues commercial flour in the U.S. Shiga infections can result in kidney failure, stomach pain, and bloody diarrhea. Doctors warn that people with the weakest immune systems face the highest risk including small children, the elderly, and those affected by underlying medical conditions.
Shiga which also goes by the name of verotoxin so far has no cure. This means that a doctor will be able to alleviate its symptoms not get you rid of the pathogen.
The FDA recently warned that any type of flour regardless of producer can be contaminated with the said pathogens. The bugs can be killed when food is baked, boiled, heated, fried or roasted.
However, if you eat raw dough, you can get sick from the bacteria thriving in it, the agency said. In short you could get sick even if you just lick the beaters covered in raw cookie dough.
The latest FDA warning will be hard to digest for dough lovers who thought that if the material doesn’t contain raw eggs it is perfectly safe to eat. Additionally, if the raw dough has eggs in it, there is also the risk of a Salmonella infection.
