Researchers from the Duke NUS Medical School, Singapore, discovered that fitness trackers are not helping so many people who want to improve their health. It seems that fitness trackers have benefits only on short-terms. However, when it comes to a longer period of time, they have no advantages for your body.
This is the first study regarding fitness trackers which is made for a longer period of time. Most of the studies made in the past were made only for a small period. Moreover, they were funded by the developers of these devices. It was hard to tell if they are really telling the truth or they just want to advertise their products.
Researchers decided to follow 800 adults for a year. The most important thing is that they assigned participants into different groups by random choice. This makes the study more efficient. Most of the volunteers had working jobs are they were between 21 and 65 years old.
There were four groups. The first one received a Fitbit to wear every day. Moreover, they also got 22 dollars every week if they walked at least 50 000 steps. The second group had also to wear Fitbit and received money, but they had to donate it to a charity. The third group got the fitness tracker and no money. Finally, the fourth group did not receive anything.
Researchers discovered that after six people, the only people who were still doing physical activity were those who were able to keep the cash. After one year, most of the participants gave up wearing their fitness trackers.
The biggest issue is that even those who continue to exercise had no benefits regarding their health. They did not lose weight or improved their blood pressure. Even the researchers were expecting the fitness trackers to work better. Unfortunately, not only that they do not work as good as they should, but people do not seem to be motivated by charity.
However, the Fitbit officials are confident about their device. They say that fitness trackers can really make a difference and that people lost weight by using them. They promised to invest more in a better technology and find ways to keep people motivated.
