According to the lead researcher of the study, Professor Aedin Cassidy from the University of East Anglia, the benefits of rich in flavonoids food for cardiovascular disease and diabetes have been known for a long time, but this is the first time that their benefits were linked with better erectile functions as well. Half of the middle aged men worldwide have problems with their erectile functions and most of the older men.
Other flavonoids can be found in vegetables, teas, herbs and wine. When men ate a few portions of food high in either flavanones, flavones or anthocyanins, the risk of erectile dysfunctions decreased with 10%. The foods that are high in flavonoids and are eaten the most in the United States are blueberries, strawberries, apples, pears, citrus fruits and red wine.
The study was a large one, including 50,000 middle aged men. The data collected went back as far as 1986 and data was collected every four years. They were mainly asked about the consistency of their diets and their ability to have and maintain an erection. The men who participated in the study were healthy and factors like physical activity, smoking habits, caffeine intake and body weight were also taken into consideration. One third of the men were having issues with their erectile functions, but those whose diet consisted of food rich in flavonoids had less erectile dysfunctions than the others.
