Our peculiar times allow women to delay motherhood by freezing eggs. So in other words, the future can be blocked and frozen up to the moment when we decide to do something with it. Babies can wait in the essence of women’s eggs that are preserved and kept in refrigerators. This sounds like a sci-fi scenario but it is mere reality that could raise some serious questions about how we perceive and program life.
However, delaying motherhood by freezing eggs could seriously harm the chance of having a successful birth, although there are many calls for more women to consider the option. Equality of chances has made women focus more on their careers rather than family life, which makes them compromise at a certain level and have their eggs harvested for “the perfect moment”. The perfect moment seldom happens in one’s life and ironically, most of the time we miss it. Speaking of the perfect moment, frozen eggs are not very efficient at guaranteeing pregnancy.
Of course younger and fresher eggs are healthier, the rules are universal for anything that falls under the somewhat artificial preservation process. Freezing damages eggs and reduces a woman’s opportunity to become a mother.
To strengthen the conclusions, US researchers from the Centre of Human Reproduction in US have studied no less than 93% of all donors performing In Vitro Fertility cycles from 2013, including data gathered from eight out of a total of 10 fertility clinics. According to expert analysis, women have a 56% chance to become mothers with their fresh eggs compared with 47% chance of motherhood via frozen eggs. In other words, out of each 100 women who have IVF through the freezing process known as cryopreservation, nine may not become mothers, as the eggs lose their properties in the process.
In spite of the alarming differences, critics declare that the study faced some serious limitations as it didn’t consist of a randomized trial in which researchers could thoroughly and extensively compare the success of frozen versus fresh eggs in matched groups of women. Furthermore, experts state that only 10 years from now we will be able to completely understand the real impact behind the data on the success rates of women who freeze their eggs for later use.
The freezing eggs process is highly beneficial for important corporations who announced they intend to cover egg freezing for female employees. This could drive women ignore the serious impacts of the matter and relate to what their career pathways are somehow leading them towards. Apple and Facebook are among the list of companies that promote cryopreservation.
