Fukushima nuclear disaster occurred in 2011. Since then radiation has been traveling around the World and not it has come across the Pacific. Fukushima radiation has been found in the US after more than 5 years since the nuclear disaster.
Researchers have found traces of cesium-134, radioactive matter, in Oregon. The good news is that the levels of this radioactive matter are low and they are not dangerous for animals or humans. This is still concerning because radioactive matter can resist for years.
This problem started in 2011 in Japan when a 9.0 magnitude earthquake caused tsunamis. Due to the tsunamis, the Fukushima nuclear power plant was damaged. After this nuclear disaster, radiation started to spread across the world. The most affected were Japanese citizens because the levels of radiation were extremely high.
Some of the radioactive matters which polluted the water and air were iodine-131, cesium 137, and cesium-134. The last one was now found in Oregon. Another good news is cesium-134 has a short half-life. This means the Fukushima radiation in the US is not dangerous for people and it will disappear in a few years.
Researchers mentioned that this is a first for the US since there was never found cesium-134 until now. They also mentioned that small quantities might have been detected in albacore tuna. Experts mentioned that people don’t need to be concerned about Fukushima radiation in the US because they are harmless in such small quantities.
The fact that cesium-134 was the single element detected in the US is another great news because Fukushima radiation included more dangerous spills than cesium-137. This type of radioactive matter is a much more dangerous one and it resists for more than 30 years. This radioactive matter is still found in some countries after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
Fukushima radiation was first detected last year in North America. This radiation affected fishes and one salmon tested positive for cesium-134. Of course, the level of radiation was really small and there was no reason for concern.
Researchers mentioned that Fukushima radiation might hit the US in the next 3 or 4 years and that time the levels of radiation will be bigger. Let’s hope that this problem won’t affect people, the environment or animals.
Did you know the Fukushima radiation hit the US?
