Children are the best gift you can get, despite the fact that they can be overwhelming sometimes. A new study shows that having children is a great thing for your life expectancy. This research focused on showing the benefits of parenthood at an old age.
Although taking care and providing for kids is hard, there are a lot of great things about it. Parenthood can make you live longer. People that have children are more likely to have a longer life when compared to those who don’t have any kids.
The Benefits Of Having Children At An Older Age
Previous studies have shown that children can make you live longer, but this new research shows the benefits you have at an older age. Researchers from the Karolinska Institute, Sweden, discovered that people with kids have a higher chance of living more. They investigated people older than 60. Scientists analyzed data from 1.5 million Swedes who were born between 1911 and 1925.
Despite the fact that the risk of death increases when we age, the team found that people with children had a greater longevity. People aged 60 who have kids had 2 years more on their remaining life expectancy when compared to those without kids.
Men aged 60 with children had a remaining life expectancy of 20.2 years. The ones who did not have children had only 18.4 years. The same thing was noted for women. Those with kids had a 24.6 years remaining life expectancy while childless women had 23.1.
At the age of 80, men that have children had a life expectancy of 7.7 years. Those who did not have kids had only 7. 80 years old women with children had 9.5 years life expectancy, while women without kids had 8.9. These findings were published in the Journal Of Epidemiology and Community Health:
This research showed that parents who are older gain more benefits from having children. Having children has a bigger impact on men than on women. Also, married men with kids have a bigger life expectancy than those who are not married but have children. This shows that their benefits come more from marriage than from having children.
What is your opinion about this study? Do you think that having children can increase life expectancy?
