There is yet another reason why people, and women especially, should start eating a lot healthier from now on. According to a new study, which the Journal of Nutrition recently published, it seems that a healthy diet can help reduce the risk of hearing loss in women by 30%. It’s interesting that past studies have analyzed how certain nutrients might affect this risk, but none of them looked at the overall link between a healthy diet hearing loss risk. In order to each this conclusion, the experts compared three different diets and analyzed the connection between them and risk of hearing loss in women.
The team analyzed the DASH diet, the Alternate Mediterranean diet, and the Alternative Healthy Eating Index-2010 diet in about 70,966 women. They followed their progress for 22 years and found out that a healthy diet was connected to a lower risk of developing hearing loss. According to Sharon Curhan, the lead author of this new study, what they noticed was very interesting and unexpected. An overall healthier diet was able to decrease the risk of moderate and worse hearing loss. This is yet another proof that eating well helps our overall health, including hearing.
A healthy diet reduces the risk of hearing loss in women
In order to obtain these results, the team gathered dietary information from the women in their study every four years. In the case of women with diets resembling the DASH or AMED ones, they had a 30% lower risk of hearing loss.
However, when studying a sub-cohort of 33,000 women, for whom the team also collected hearing-related information, the researchers realized that the percent might be even greater. Also, it might also include the AHEI-2010 diet. So, this is yet another reason why people should start following a healthier diet. It doesn’t matter that this study was done on women, because men benefit from it too.
