Major French sports stars were being carried to a remote area of Argentina to participate in a survivalist type reality show two helicopters when the two collided. Sadly, 10 people were killed, which includes a sailing champion and two-time Olympic medalists.
According to reports, the two helicopters hit in midair close to Villa Castelli, approximately 730 miles to the northwest of Buenos Aires. In addition to eight French nationalists, two Argentine pilots were among those killed.
Photographers on the scene said a horrific explosion took place upon impact. Immediately after, images of the tangled wreckage on fire on the group were captured show just how bad the incident was.
Several well-known and accomplished athletes were onboard to include Florence Arthaud, professional sailor, Camille Muffat, Olympic gold medal swimmer, and Alexis Vastine, Olympic boxer.
All of the eight contestants were going on a show called “Dropped”, which consisted of them being blindfolded and taken by helicopter to a remote area where they would have to figure how to get out. The crux of the show was to test the physical and mental ability of the participants as they faced incredible obstacles and harsh natural elements.
Similar to the US show Survivor, remaining episodes of the 2013 season was cancelled by TFI, a private sector network in France, after a 25-year-old contestant had a heart attack and died on the first day the show was filmed. After a short hiatus, the show was being revised because of popular demand.
At this time, Manuel Valls, Prime Minister of France is working with authorities in Argentina to determine the reason for the two helicopters colliding. A statement was released by the show’s producers, Adventure Line Productions, saying everyone was devastated and is sharing the insurmountable pain of family members and other loved ones.
The producers also stated that they are in touch with other production teams at the site of the crash, as well as authorities in both France and Argentina.
One of the helicopters in the crash was property of the Santiago del Estero province and the other, the La Rioja province. It was reported that the helicopter accidentally brushed against the six-people Eurocopter from La Rioja after takeoff, resulting in the crash around 5:15 pm
The area of the crash is on the edge of the Andes mountain range where the terrain is extremely rugged and with a low population. After hearing of the crash, people from around the world took to social media to mourn the loss of some amazing people.
