Let the light into your house

The nice part of the winter is almost gone and from now on the days will simply be short and cold so everybody might feel a bit depressed. But if you wonder how to get rid of the winter blue, specialists have some advice that might work.

But first of all the winter blue should be distinguished from depression and those who think they might suffer a depressive episode should seek specialized help. But if your mood is just a bit blue because of the lack of sunlight and if it’s hard for you to get out of bed in the morning because you feel lazy there might be some things you could do to make yourself feel better.

Expose yourself to light. Get as much sunlight as you possibly can – tear those curtains or even go outside. If you live in an area where clouds cover the sun for tens of days in a row you might consider getting a sunlamp.

Exercise. When we move the physical activity makes our bodies release endorphins which reduce anxiety and stress. Specialists recommend daily physical activity for people at increased risk of depression. Even if getting motivated might be hard when all you want to do is lay in bed you could do easy things like cleaning around the house or playing a Wii game.

Eat healthy. Fast food might seem the best solution for the days when you’re not in the mood to do anything else but it can also worsen your state. On the days when you feel low try eating dark chocolate or aliments rich in potassium, like bananas and coconut water.

Hang out with your loved ones. You might have the feeling that you’re alone on this bad sad world but you’re not. Friends and family are there for you if you have the courage to reach out and ask them to spend time with you. Being with the people you love might make you feel better. However if your family is unsupportive just skip this step.

Stick to your goals. Making a calendar and sticking to your goals might give you the sense of doing important things. Achieving your goals can bring you happiness and a sense of fulfilment.

Sleep well. Make sure not to have less than 7 but also not more than 9 hours of sleep per night. Being well rested is very important while sleeping too many or too few hours can make you sick on the long-term.
