Infant injuries are a common thing. Young children are curious and they tend to get hurt a lot. The problem is that some nursery products might be the ones to blame for their injuries. A new study reveals that the rate of infant injuries is rising due to nursery products.
This research focused on showing that many nursery products can hurt babies. Despite the fact that they should be the ones that keep them safe and comfortable, some of them can be dangerous. The researchers observed that the rate of injuries caused by these products has increased by more than 20% between 2003 and 2011.
What types of injuries are caused by nursery products?
In order to conduct this study, researchers analyzed 20 years of data from emergency departments. They discovered that most of these injuries were to the neck, face, and head. These parts of the body are very sensitive, especially in young children.
The authors of the study also observed that more than 80% of these incidents happened at home. Infants got hurt because they fell when they were in one of these nursery products. Pediatricians who were not involved in this study mentioned that the numbers are not concerning or uncommon.
Many doctors said that infants have big heads and that is why they tend to get hit in that area when they fall. They also have little control over their bodies and that is why the rate of injuries is always increasing.
Some nursery products are more popular than others. Since many parents buy the same products for their babies the rate of injuries is increasing. Not all the products are hurting the infants, and most of the time they are not to blame. Children are just clumsy and tend to injure themselves a lot
Which products are to blame for these incidents?
Researchers observed that there are only a few nursery objects that are known for causing these injuries. The one most associated with injuries is the carrier. More than 19.5% of injuries were caused by baby carriers. Cribs and mattresses were responsible for 18.6% of these incidents.
Strollers are also amongst the top products associated with infant injuries. More than 16% of injuries were linked to them. Jumpers and walkers were associated with 16% of incidents.
These numbers should not get parents alarmed. It is normal for children to fall and get injured, especially at a young age. The only thing that parents can do is to watch their children in order to avoid severe injuries.
