Most of the robots that have been created until now don’t have tactile senses as sophisticated as humans. This is because they have external sensors which make it hard for them to experience a touch as people do. This is why their moves are often rigid and bulky.
However, this won’t be a problem anymore because a group of scientists from Cornell University has managed to develop a new type of robot. This robot has internal sensors that give it human-like tactile senses. This is going to help scientists develop better robots.
These internal sensors were initially added to a robotic hand. This is the first time a robot has internal sensors. Until now scientists developed robots with external sensors which were able to detect certain thingsm but not as accurate as people do.
In order to create this robot with human-like tactile senses, scientists used a 3D printer and lithography. The soft lithography was used to develop the elastomeric sensors. These sensors were put inside the robotic hand. After they were implanted, the internal sensors were able to feel even the smallest things, just like any other human.
In order to test if the robotic hand really has human-like tactile sensors, researchers performed a lot of tests and gave the robot a multitude of tasks. They made the robotic hand touch and grasp. One of the most interesting tests for the robot was to feel 3 tomatoes and to decide which one of them is the ripest. The robot was able to complete the task without much effort.
This is a great step for scientists and researchers who are building prosthetics. This could also make the lives of people who wear prosthetics much easier. They will be able to feel things almost as good as they felt them before having to use a prosthetic limb.
The researchers who developed this robot mentioned that this new technology could also help develop bio-inspired robots. These robots could be used to explore space or do other tasks that might prove too dangerous for people to accomplish.
Despite the fact that robots have been just a theme for science fiction movies in the past, now they are more and more developed and soon we’ll see robots everywhere, performing an array of tasks.
What is your opinion about this robot that has human-like tactile sense?
