Is Robin the New Joker?
There is this crazy theory going on about how Robin is going to become the new Joker in Warner Bros.’ new DC World. It is not yet clear whether Robin will become the Joker because he dies, or because the actual Joker dies. If the latter possibility were true it means that Warner Bros. are going to change some things that we know about the Dark Knight and his fellow assistant.
The rumor basically started because in one of the upcoming “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” movie’s trailers Robin’s suit displays two punctures which also coincide with two of Joker’s wounds revealed in the “Suicide Squad” promo pictures. It is unclear whether this is a coincidence or not but, for now, this is enough evidence for fans to get hyped about.
Needless to say, not all of the fans agree with the theory. Some people have already said that it cannot be possible because Zack Snyder’s main source of inspiration is “The Dark Knight Returns” and in that comic plot Robin does not come back as the Joker. This does happen, however, in “The Dark Knight Strikes Again” but that is only a sequel to “Returns”.
It is quite difficult for Snyder to move away from the general Batman rules, especially after the broke Zod’s neck in “Man of Steel”. Snyder does have the option of combining several storylines into the movie and that would give him a lot of freedom. But making Robin turn into Joker might have two possible endings: it can be really bad or exceptionally good, but it needs a great story.
“Suicide Squad” is a little different than what we expected. Especially because it seems that every character in the movie is going to get their own, new back story and this could be very good considering that the majority of insight we get on the DC universe usually revolves around heroes and not villains.
The Joker has yet to be confirmed in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and it is quite unlikely since we are going to have so many characters in the movie. “Suicide Squad” is perhaps the perfect moment and the earliest one to unleash the Joker and from the trailer, at least, Jared Leto seems to have been a good Joker cast.
“Batman v Superman” is due to be released on the 25th of March 2016 while the “Suicide Squad” is going to be released in August 2016, so you had better get ready because superheroes and villains are going to clash hard next year.
