According to the latest teaser posted on Facebook by the South Korean conglomerate, new users will not need to wake their screen from hibernation when checking for various notifications, as LG G5 will feature an “always on” screen.
Although the short animated GIF posted on LG’s official Facebook page did not reveal much about the phone’s new design, it did however offer some insight around one particular functionality of the new device. The “always on” feature will allow users to always see the time and date on their screen, as well as any notifications that they may have missed.
This news marks a direct competition with Samsung and their latest announcement for a trademarked “always on” display on the much anticipated Galaxy S7. Although both Samsung and LG are creating an entire marketing campaign around this, the public opinion is quick to notice the fact that this feature is not at all original, as it is already present in devices from Lenovo, Google and even LG itself. Nokia N8, which was released back in 2010, also has an ambient display feature available for its users.
It is safe to assume that both developers have managed to find a way to display notification without consuming too much battery, this being one of the main concerns for users. With mobile users constantly on the road nowadays, they want to know that their device will last for long periods of time, without having to charge it multiple times per day.
It appears as though the new LG model will be able to incorporate this feature without lighting the whole screen, making use of an AMOLED screen. Therefore, it will only use a few pixels in order to display information on screen, drawing significantly less power than an LCD screen doing the same thing.
In Samsung’s case, although Galaxy S6 also incorporated an AMOLED screen, it did not include the ambiental display option.
It is clear by now that Samsung has a strong desire to be perceived as a flagship manufacturer and as a viable alternative for the iPhone, but with this new revelation by LG it’s possible that the competition just got tighter. As of now it still remains to be seen where the biggest drive will come from in terms of design and technological advancement.
LG Electronics Inc. is a South Korean multinational company which operates in the consumer electronics sector, with annual global sales of around $53 billion.
