Sunday night, during an AMA session on Reddit, Elon Musk answered 15 questions regarding the upcoming Mars missions. The SpaceX CEO gave details about the glass dome under which Mars colonists will live and the daily attributes that they will have.
Ever since the International Aeronautical Congress that took place in Guadalajara, Elon Musk has been answering question after question about the upcoming Mars missions. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO is more than happy to interact with the fans and detail his vision.
According to his latest Q&A session on Reddit, the Mars colonists will live under a giant glass dome, conducting most of their work underground. This way they will keep away from the deadly space radiation that floods the planet due to its thin atmosphere.
The billionaire scientists inventor-entrepreneur also added that it would take somewhere around 40 to 100 years for the Earth to build a self-sustaining civilization on Mars. Luckily, those who will find Martian life unbearable will be able to return to Earth.
Out of the total 1 million Mars colonists that SpaceX is planning to send to the Red Planet, a couple of them are bound to change their mind and return home. Musk took this variable into consideration when he designed the factory that will produce methane and liquid oxygen, the basic fuel of the Interplanetary Transport System.
Speaking of the ITS, Musk decided to name the first spacecraft from the series Heart of Gold, inspired by the novel A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. However, he is still searching for names for the next two spacecraft as ITS “just won’t do it.”
Currently, SpaceX is working on the Falcon 9 Block 5 model, as it was the best one. The other Falcon 9 models will not be used anymore.
Due to the reusable design of its rockets, SpaceX will save up to $100,000 from basic equipment, alone. Musk also plans on making the trip affordable for the colonists. The businessman wants to offer humans the possibility of moving to the Red Planet at the cost of an average American house. Unfortunately, the white picket fence is out of the question.
From what Musk is describing, Mars will look exactly like a scene from a Sci-fi movie with its glass dome and mining robots.
If given the opportunity, would you become one of the Mars colonists?
