According to media reports, the Titans of Mavericks surfing contest might not be taking place this year. But not because of the weather. Most likely, it will be caused by the organizer’s filing for bankruptcy.
Mavericks is situated in northern California. It is a very popular surfing location. Situated outside of Pillar Point Harbor, the area can house over 25 feet high and 60 feet long waves. These can develop almost routinely. An unusually shaped rock formation is believed to cause them to break.
The first Titans of Mavericks surfing contest was held back in 1999. Up to 2014, it had 9 editions. The surfing contest cannot be held every year. A certain specific set of weather conditions has to be met.
When held, the competition lasts just a day. Usually, the organizers invite 24 big-wave surfers. The competition season lasts from November 01 to March 31 of the following year.
As this year’s period is coming closer to an end, there is still no news about the event. And in this case, no news could be bad news.
According to reports, the Mavericks surfing contest may not be held this year. Even if the perfect weather conditions will be met. The reason? Financial problems.
Titans of Mavericks is organized by two companies. One is the Titans of Mavericks LLC. The other is the Cartel Management Inc. Earlier this week, the two surfing contest organizers filed for bankruptcy.
On February 31, they filed for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This was deposited at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Central California District office. And the 2016-17 Titans of Maverick competition may be facing yet another issue.
Last week, on Friday, the surfing contest organizers were also sued. They were accused of breach of contract by Red Bull. The Red Bull Media North America was one of the event partners.
It should have been in charge of live streaming the Mavericks surfing contest. Livestreaming was one of the only remaining viewing options. Back in 2010, the public was banned from overlooking from the cliffs. In 2014, Cartel also stopped any on-site public viewing.
Surfing enthusiasts could either rent a seat on a boat. Or settle for the event live stream.
Sabrina Brennan released a statement on February 01. She is a San Mateo County Harbor Commissioner. According to her, the event seems “highly unlikely” to take place this year. Brennan herself is quite involved with the competition. She has been advocating for the women’s rights to participate in the Mavericks surfing contest.
Brennan also went to offer the reasons behind the gloomy prevision. She pointed out the bankruptcy filing. And also the Red Bull Media House action. It will be hard to hold the event without them.
The commissioner also pointed out another fact. A host of permits would also be needed in order to carry out the event. And these can take quite a while to emit. More exactly, longer than the remaining contest period.
If the Mavericks surfing contest will actually take place this year, it will come with an all-time first. It would be the first edition in which women are allowed to compete. The contest rules are quite simple. Event organizers announce when the Titans of Mavericks will take place. Starting from then, the participants have 48 hours to reach the event location. More exactly, the Half Moon Bay.
It remains to be seen what will be the fate of the 2016-17 edition. For the moment, the organizers did not release an official announcement.
