More People Should Get Bariatric Surgery

The bariatric surgery has many benefits.

A new study shows that more people should get bariatric surgery. The study published in PLoS Medicine says the surgery would be able to prevent or resolve cases of type 2 diabetes and hypertension, as well as other diseases caused by obesity.

The bariatric surgery reduces the size of the stomach and so less food can be absorbed. There are a lot of bariatric surgery types. Some remove portions of the stomach (sleeve gastrectomy), some tie off the stomach with a band (gastric band) and some reconnect part the small intestine with a part of the stomach (gastric bypass).

The study used already existing information and followed 3,882 patients after their bariatric surgery for 3,4 years. They found out that the patients presented fewer cases of type 2 diabetes, myocardial infarction, hypertension, angina onset and obstructive  sleep apnea. The risks of death remained the same though. Since the study took place only for 3 years, it might be possible for things to change in the future.

There are an estimated 1,4 million people who suffer from obesity in the United Kingdom. Obesity is an appearance issue that does not only lead to mockery but can also cause depression and anxiety. What is worse is that if not treated it can lead to an early death and until then to many health problems.

Many people struggle to lose weight but the circumstances they find themselves in make it really hard. The study shows that many people who need the surgery don’t do it. Some people are not aware of its benefits, some people can’t afford it and some are simply ignorant and refuse to do it.

If you want to get bariatric surgery here are some false and popular myths. This surgery won’t fix everything quickly. It takes a lot of time and a lot of effort from your behalf as well. Your diet and exercise will be monitored and you need to expect some risks like leaking, infections and dumping syndrome. Also, bariatric surgery will result in weight loss only if a healthy lifestyle is maintained.

Lastly, not every obese person can qualify for this surgery. The index of your body mass has to be at least 40, or you need to have a BMI of minimum 35 and at least two health problems caused by obesity like hypertension, osteoarthritis or heart disease.

Because doctors do not encourage bariatric surgery as the first option to lose weight, you cannot qualify unless other methods to lose weight in the past have failed. Choosing the right surgeon is also extremely important.

Having concluded that, more people should get bariatric surgery in order to be healthier, we suggest  to think about it, especially if you have discovered that you qualify.
