Global warming and climate change have caused a lot of side effects that have been affecting people, the environment, and animals. Some of the animals that are now in danger of extinction are polar bears, birds, and red wolves. All because they are going to be left without a habitat in the near future.
Another animal that is now in danger is the reindeer. Santa’s helper is having some problem due to global warming. Studies have shown reindeer are becoming smaller and smaller every year. A survey has clearly shown that the weight of these animals has been declining with more than 10%.
One of the factors that are affecting this animal and causing them to become smaller is global warming. This is affecting the female reindeer because the high temperatures are depriving it of nutrients. Due to the lack of nutrients, the phases of gestation are not completed as they should have been.
Despite the fact that during the summer there is more grass to feed on, and the animals are getting bigger, when winter comes, instead of snow, there is rainfall. Once the rainfall settles on the ground, it freezes and animals can’t reach their food. Due to this phenomeon, reindeers are becoming smaller.
Along with the fact that reindeers are becoming smaller, female reindeers are giving birth to little calves or are even aborting them because they are starving. By comparison, in 1994 the average weight of a reindeers was 55kg. Six years ago, in 2010, the average weight dropped to 48 kg.
The main problem is that the average weight is continuing to decline more and more every year. This means that in the near future, these animals might even be extinct because they won’t be able to survive in such conditions.
Experts mentioned that despite suffering from the effects of global warming and climate change, reindeers are still doing better than polar bears which are now on the verge of being extinct. All of these animals are suffering from the effects of the rising temperatures and this should be another wake-up call.
In the next few years, Santa might need to find another animal to deliver gifts because reindeers are becoming smaller and they might even go extinct. Let’s hope that this doesn’t happen.
