Until recently, Snapchat’s most famous option of displaying location-based filters was only available for a few select categories, such as artists, designers and various businesses, who wanted to purchase it for their events. Now, however, Snapchat’s custom geofilters are no longer exclusive, with the company offering them to anyone willing to spare $5.
The company has just made their famous feature available for everyone who wishes to put their imagination to test and design their own location-based filter. This option works great for fun and relaxed events such as birthday parties, bachelor parties, weddings and so on.
If you are new to this and don’t know how it works exactly, here’s a little run down.
If you want to add a geofilter, you will have to come up with a design and when it’s ready, send it through Snapchat’s “on-demand” portal. When the image is uploaded, you will have to define an area where you want this filter to show up.
It will have to be between 20,000 and 5 million square feet. You will also have to select the time and dates when they should appear. These filters can be live between one hour and 30 days.
Once you’ve selected all the options, it will then be sent for approval, which should be reviewed within one business day. Unfortunately, the company did not give any details regarding the criteria used to review the images.
The price for featuring a customized geofilter starts at $5 and it can go much higher, depending on the time length and the location range that you want to use it for.
If you are still unsure about what to do with this feature, check out this video created by Snapchat, that briefly explains what it’s all about. Who knows? You might even get some ideas for your next birthday party.
Currently, these filters are only available in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. If it proves to be successful, chances are it will extend to other countries, as well.
Snapchat is one of the most popular video apps in the world these days. According to recent statistics, it has over 100 million daily users, which is beyond impressive for a service that was just launched a few years ago.
Last year it generated around $50 million in profits and since these highly-praised geofilters do not come for free, the company is bound to make a lot more money in the near future.
