Snapchat Spectacles make their debut by being sold through a vending machine.

Although Snapchat is widely-known thanks to their very popular messaging app which has a lot of interesting features, the company has taken its first steps into the hardware market with the Snapchat Spectacles. They are a pair of sunglasses which allow users to take short videos from the first person perspective.

Snapchat released the Spectacles in a quite unique way. The only way anyone could have gotten the first few pairs that were launched was though a pop-up vending machine in Venice Beach, known as a Snapbot.

The Snapchat Spectacles were initially revealed in September, and their main purpose is to replace standard sunglasses by providing the added function of recording video which will be saved automatically in Snapchat Memories. The glasses can record 10 seconds of video up to 30 seconds in three increments.

Although when people initially heard about $130 price tag of the gadget they were skeptical, but most have already grown fond of their specific design even without the video function. They come equipped with a yellow camera on one lens and a light on the other so that users know when it’s recording. They come in three colors teal, coral, and black.

In the package, you can expect to find a charging case, charging cable and a special cleaning cloth. Each full charge of the glasses will allow for up to 16 minutes of video of satisfactory quality. When the battery is depleted you can always charge them using the case, which functions as an external battery, providing up to 4 additional charges.

The Snapchat Spectacles starts recording video as soon as you tap the button on the left of the frame. You can tap it two additional times if you want to record up to 30 seconds. The camera has wide 115-degrees angle which allows it record video similar to that of the human eye.

Currently, the Spectacles only work with iOS and Android devices. They can also function autonomously for a short period if you don’t have a phone in range. They can connect and transfer data either through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

Are you using Snapchat? Are you planning on purchasing the new Snapchat Spectacles?
