During the holiday season, people tend to drink and eat more. There is also another trend that could be even more dangerous in the long term: social smoking. This type of occasional smoking is commonly believed to have no side effects. Many people think that smoking a cigarette every once in a while won’t hurt them. However, research shows that the effects of social smoking can be very dangerous.
Social Smoking and Its Actual Effects on the Body
Specialists mentioned that every cigarette is a harmful pack of chemicals which enters the body and can leave behind long-term problems. Professor Simon Chapman said that social smoking might not elevate the risk for health problems as much as regular smoking does. Despite this fact, smoking just a cigarette a day or on occasions still has a significant impact on your health.
There are two types of effects caused by both regular and social smoking. The first kind of effects are the immediate ones. When you take a drag from a cigarette, your heart rate and blood pressure start increasing. The heart pumps differently and the blood flow to capillaries starts to decrease. Less oxygen reaches the muscle, the brain, and other organs.
Smoking damages the DNA cells and can increase the risk of developing 13 different types of cancer including lung cancer. Although the risk of cancer for those who practice social smoking is lower than those who smoke regularly, it should not be taken lightly. Researchers mentioned that there is no exact number of mutations that cause cancer. It might be just the wrong mutation that can be caused by a great number of factors.
Smoking anything from one to four cigarettes a day can triple the risk of lung cancer. Another significant finding shows that social smokers present almost the same risk of heart disease as people who smoke every day. Regular and even social smoking can cause other health problems as well. Some of these problems include erectile dysfunctions, cataracts, and weak bones.
