The statin treatment is the number one therapy for reducing the ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol. However, a new review and meta-analysis show that there are also other treatments that could reduce the risk of heart problems.
According to the new findings, the alternatives to statin treatment which include different cholesterol-lowering medications, intestinal bypass surgery, and a heart-healthy diet are also efficient and seem to offer the same level of heart health stability as statins when the cholesterol level drops.
A cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Marc Sabatine, examined the outcomes of 49 clinical trials. They covered 25 clinical trials for statin medicine, as well as trials for ileal bypass surgery, heart-healthy diet, bile acid sequestrants and ezetimibe. Moreover, two trials for PCSK9 inhibitors were also included in the examined results.
The findings showed that non-statin treatments decreased cardiovascular chance by 25 percent for each one mmol/L reduction in LDL cholesterol levels. Statins like simvastatin and atorvastatin caused a similar result of 23 percent decline per one mmol/L decrease.
Sabatine believes that doctors should center on reducing the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels and not on finding a particular medicine for the condition. The findings of the trials show that many interventions help with the situation. The evidence review was a response of the scientists towards the increased role of statins in the treatment of high cholesterol issues that represent a major risk factor for heart conditions.
According to a national survey, during 2011 and 2012, more than a quarter of the United States adult population over 40 years old were using statins to decrease the liver’s production of cholesterol.
Sabatine was concerned that because of the intense use of statins physicians would recommend statin treatment to sufferers, and if the medicine failed to reduce the cholesterol level, they would then wash their hands of the concern. Sabatine also believes that when it comes to the connection between the level of cholesterol and one’s risk of cardiovascular events, a lower level is all the time considered a better one. Moreover, several research authors revealed financial relations to the pharmaceutical industry that lead to a high prescription of the statin treatment.
