Super news for Overwatch fans: Blizzard has officially announced that their new FPS will begin closed beta later this month, on October 27th. Closed beta commences just a few days before the famous BlizzCon even takes place, so It is safe to speculate that Blizzard might want some data on the game’s current state before revealing its future plans at BlizzCon.
Overwatch was announced approximately one year ago, while Heroes of the Storm was still in closed beta. The game looked nice and had some fresh new interesting characters that had never appeared before in the Blizzard universe. Players have been waiting for an invite ever since and while some were lucky enough to get one, the majority of us are perhaps still drooling over the idea that we might get it soon.
Judging by the fact that Blizzard announced closed beta now, we could even predict that the game will be officially released in summer 2016. The same approach was adopted with Heroes of the Storm: closed beta did not last too long, open beta was available one month before the release and on June 2nd Heroes was available to play for anybody in the world.
While this concept is not entirely safe, it does have the psychological impact required to draw as many players as possible. The notion of “soon” always keeps players on their toes. Will I get access tomorrow? How about next week? Should I just go on a stream and hope that someone gives me a key? Players tend to ask all these questions and get super involved in the community and by the time the game launches, it will have an abundance of loyal players.
At the same time, Overwatch brings a very fresh perspective to the FPS genre. It will not be taken lightly by elitists of super competitive players, but they are fun and very team oriented. The teams were boosted from 5v5 to 6v6, because more is always better, you can have 6 identical characters in the same team and the scoring system is similar to the Heroes one, focusing on team play more than individual skill.
This practically sums up the fantastic news for Overwatch fans. Make sure you have applied for beta, because there is a slight chance that you might get in just before October 27th.
