Fish Will Love Your Christmas Tree

Donate your tree to the fish

If you chose to recycle it, fish will love your Christmas tree. An initiative by Kentucky’s Division of Fish and Wildlife Resources says that your tree can live its third life as habitat for fish.

We all love Christmas tree and many of still like the old-fashion natural chopped tree. But many of us also feel guilty after we take our decorations down and the moment comes to throw our beloved friend that made our holidays lovely, to the trash. Not anymore!

KDFWR offers many drop-off points across Kentucky where you can take your tree to live its third life and make some other lives better – those of fish living in Cave Run Lake.

Christmas tree can make the perfect habitat for nesting and ideal homes for invertebrates or small fish that become food for larger fish.

KDFWR is trying to improve fishing on Cave Run Lake since two years ago by increasing the habitat available to the fish. They divided the lake in eight major sections that needed to be improved. Each section was about one mile long. KDFWR hopes that the sections are large enough for more boats to fish at the same time.

Until now they managed to restore some of the habitats by placing different natural structures into the water. The restoration teams have used mostly trees and root wads which could help the fish feel safe and breed.

Given the huge quantities of material used for the restoration works, KDFWR has bought a big boat able to transport the materials to the zones of the lake where they were needed.

However, KDFWR needs help to get the work done faster and better. One way of helping is by offering to volunteer and help with the project directly at the lake. But if you don’t have the time, the least you can do is to donate your Christmas tree instead of dumping it near your trash.

Besides Christmas tree, other elements that can be donated are old pallets, root wads, other kind of trees and even tree stumps. So if you are not one of those people who buy a natural chopped tree and you prefer a plastic one instead, or if you are not a Christian who celebrates Christmas, you might have other chances to donate. In the spring, when you chop down a tree you don’t want in your yard anymore just donate it for the sake of the fish. Or for the pleasure of fishing.
