Alzheimer’s Disease Could Be Kept at Bay with Weed

We’re currently experiencing the second recreational marijuana awakening – this time in a legal way – but researchers are also working hard at discovering the medical benefits of its compounds.

According to a new study, marijuana could delay and keep at bay Alzheimer’s disease and its damaging effects on the brain. In spite of the promising nature of this news, it is yet premature to claim that pot has the power to prevent age-related brain disorders.

A team at the Salk Institute has proved that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), one of the main compounds found in marijuana, is an active contributor to the elimination of amyloid beta, the toxic proteins associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

The findings could offer new insight into this neurological disorder and the role of inflammation. In turn, further research could pave the way to new and more efficient drugs.

However, take this research with a spoonful of salt and put the pipe down. Researchers noted that the protective effects of marijuana were tested on lab-grown neurons, which means they’re not yet sure if the same effects apply on living human beings.

At the same time, the study did not focus on the fact that marijuana could have negative effects on the aging brain, so it’s still too early to claim pot could miraculously cure Alzheimer’s, or even just protect it from the disease.

Even though previous research had already shown that cannabinoids, also found in marijuana, could protect the brain, this new study is “the first to demonstrate that cannabinoids affect both inflammation and amyloid beta accumulation in nerve cells,” explained lead author David Schubert.

These toxins are believed to greatly contribute to the development of damaging plaque in the brain, but scientists are still searching for the exact role played by amyloid beta in the process.

In the experiment, Schubert’s team used nerve cells altered to produce high amounts of amyloid beta. When left untreated, the cells would inflame and lead to higher rates of death.

However, exposing the cells to cannabinoids caused the levels of amyloid beta proteins to be reduced. Neurons were able to survive thanks to the consequent disappearance of the inflammation. It seemed as if the compounds found in marijuana were protecting the cells from dying.

Alzheimer’s might be stove off by pot, but researchers also need to be mindful of its negative effects.

Marijuana Connected to Memory Loss

As marijuana continues to be a subject of continuous controversy, a new study aims to tip the scale in the negative direction by proving that smoking marijuana connects to memory loss.

The research was published today in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine by Professor Reto Auer from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland and it highlights the effects that habitual marijuana smoking has on the human cognitive functions.

The professor and his team studied data extracted from almost 3,400 Americans in a period of over 25 years. The conclusion was that anyone who smokes marijuana daily for five years or more experiences a short term memory loss and much lower cognitive performance altogether.

For this study, the team of researchers integrated a number of variables such as age, general state of mind and use of various medication and the direct connection still remained.

These investigations were conducted on subjects who had already joined the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study.

In order to test the cognitive performance of all their subjects, the team used both marijuana smoking people and non-smoking people and assigned groups of ten people each. One of the tactics they used was to comprise a list of 15 words, which the groups were then asked to remember.

This test showed that the group of people who smoked marijuana on a constant basis were able to remember less words than the group who didn’t smoke. By and large, the difference was not significant, however the study was able to demonstrate that the more marijuana people use, the more significant the memory loss will be.

As the specialists point out, the reason for this is that THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the chemical that produces the psychological effects in humans, has the capacity to influence the way information is registered in the hippocampus.

One interesting fact is that the other cognitive functions analyzed over the course of this study, such as the ability to make quick decisions and the ability to focus were not greatly affected by the use of cannabis.

The debate over legalizing the consumption of marijuana is still ongoing in many states, with plenty of voices in the public sphere arguing the possible advantages of it also.

Some of the medical benefits that have been directly linked to it range from treating glaucoma, improving lung health, controlling epileptic seizures, stopping cancer from spreading, slowing down Alzheimer’s disease and so on.

The Omaha Tribe is the First to Consider Legalizing Marijuana

The announcement comes as tribal members voted to support marijuana legalization for both medical and recreational purposes. Following the consultative vote tribal leaders are looking to take the next step by authorizing a feasibility study regarding the cultivation of marijuana, as well as sale. The announcement was made by Vernon Miller, the Tribal Chairman.

Taking into consideration that the reservation of the Omaha Tribe is faced with endemic poverty and severely high rates of unemployment, Tribal Chairman Miller stated that the moment is compelling to look into cultivation and sale of marijuana, as well as industrial hemp.

“We’re doing what we can as a sovereign nation to provide jobs”,

he stated.

The Omaha Tribe is the first to consider legalizing marijuana. Of the four tribes found in Nebraska, the Omaha Tribe has signaled its wish to proceed with all legal actions following the statement of the U.S. Justice Department according to which reservations will be treated under the same conditions as U.S. states currently regulating the cultivation, sale and use of marijuana.

The Nebraska Omaha Tribe isn’t the first to end prohibition. However, other tribes looking into a lucrative industry have faced federal agents raiding tribal operations. In South Dakota, marijuana plants were seized indicating that while the federal level looks indulgently at these operations, states understand enforcement in a different manner.

To avoid such issues, tribal leaders of the Omaha Tribe will meet with the U.S. attorneys from Nebraska and Iowa. The tribe may be sovereign, yet it is tribal police in partnership with U.S. Attorney Office enforcing laws in the reservation.

The Attorney General of Nebraska, Doug Peterson took notice of the votes casted in the Omaha tribe last week. However, he stated that marijuana laws will continue to be enforced by local and state authorities. His statement didn’t refer to the reservation.

The vote was cast on three referendums. Firstly, the use of marijuana for medical purposes. Secondly, the use of marijuana for recreational use. Third, growing industrial hemp for propping employment and revenue.

All three passed, with the first gathering 426 votes in favor and 134 against. The second pooled 352 votes in favor and 240 against.

The results are solely consultative for the tribe council. For the time being, marijuana is illegal on the reservation. The Omaha Tribe covers three Nebraska counties, as well as one Iowa county.
