The cases of dog flu are increasing in the United States. If you are the owner of a dog, you should look out for flu symptoms, as recent reports have showed that cases of dog flu have been registered in 24 states already and according to the experts they are going to expand quickly to other states as well.
Influenza is one of the most common diseases that can affect the humans during winter. Apparently, the dogs are not spared either. Even it is common for vets to deal with dog flu during this cold season, in the last month the number of dogs that have been diagnosed with dog flu have increased majorly. According to some specialists the dog influenza could affect a lot of dogs, as it is spreading without any control.
As the isolated cases have been replaced with a major outbreak, the experts are beginning to worry. Another issue is that the dogs seem to have been infected with different forms of canine influenza. For example, a dog brought in at a vet from Helena was diagnosed with H3N2 form of influenza. What is strange about this form of influenza is that even though it is spread among humans, among dogs very few cases have been registered. According to the specialists, this strain of the disease is found more commonly in cats and rats. But, if the dogs come in contact with a cat or a dog that has been infected with H3N2, then the dog will most likely get it as well. The incubation period for the dogs who suffer from dog flu is 24 hours.
Apparently, the owners of the dogs can infect them as well. The vets recommend to wash your hands often during this period , as the virus could be on your hands. You are advised to pet your dog only after you have washed your hands with soap and hot water. The vets also suggest that every dog owner should make sure that their dog is vaccinated against the flu.
The symptoms of the dog flu include coughing, respiratory problems, appetite loss and lethargy so if you discover that your dog has one or more of these symptoms, you should contact a vet as soon as possible.
The cases of dog flu are increasing in the United States and among the 24 states affected by the dog influenza are Texas, Seattle, Montana, Washington and Chicago. In some of the states, dog centers have been closed because people were afraid that the some of the infected dogs could infect the healthy ones.
