Tinder, one of the most popular dating apps in the world, with its recognizable way of finding matches, either swiping left or right, might try to improve on this feature or add a new one altogether. The company has recently acquired the startup firm behind the video app Wheel.
Wheel is mostly known for developing a social network on which users can share video stories, a feature similar to Snapchat Stories. While the specific details of the deal were not revealed, Tinder did state that it’s interested in implementing some form of video feature into the dating app.
Wheel has founded back in 2015 when it was initially named Ferris. The company wanted to create a platform that would allow users to make and watch videos that were fun to make and watch, either by yourself or involving friends or family.
Wheel offered various features in terms of automating the editing process of videos, it gained appeal mostly for the fact that users could mix their videos with those of their friends. Any users who made their video public could easily enjoy any of their friends to further develop that respective video.
Unfortunately, Wheel, as well as any collaborative video app in general, were not very successful, not even when it was implemented by Snapchat. Wheel was only ranked 574 in the Photo and Video category on the iOS app store, with fewer than 5,000 downloads overall, most of them being in the US. The company only managed to raise $2 million in funds in 2015 from several investors like Upfront Ventures, and founder of Machinima, Allen DeBevoise.
Following the acquisition by Tinder, the founding team of the video app Wheel will join Tinder, including both its current CEO and CTO, with several other team members will join as senior engineers. Tinder’s head of product and revenue, Brian Norgard, expressed his enthusiasm about the new collaboration.
Unfortunately, at this moment, the company has not yet revealed any of its specific plans for the video app. However, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Tinder receive new video messaging, or using shorts videos for your profile.
