Although Twitch initially started and still is mostly used for live-streaming a variety of games, the platform has gradually evolved in its attempt to diversify its both its market potential and expand its user base. The newest addition to the platform will be an IRL channel, where people can share their daily lives similar to the vlogs popular on YouTube.
Twitch announced the new service on Thursday. It will consist in a new category called IRL where any Twitch user can broadcast their daily lives to their followers. However, unlike a regular vlog which involves a recording which can be edited, Twitch’s IRL channel will allow followers to chat directly with the streamer throughout their daily lives, rather than just when playing games
Twitch’s goal is to foster a different type of dialogue between the content creators and their followers, without the conversation being limited to a specific activity. The IRL channel will provide fans with a glimpse into the life of a streamer, depending on what part of which they want to reveal.
Emmet Shear, the CEO of Twitch, stated that the new channel was the result of many requests made by streamers saying that they want to share more of their everyday lives, thoughts and activities with their communities. Although game streaming is the biggest part of the Twitch’s business, the company has gradually allowed a number of various other streams under the Creative tab. The new IRL channel will expand on this initiative in hopes of expanding their user base.
Another new feature coming to Twitch in the near future is the ability to stream using your phone. The mobile broadcasting feature will come in 2017 and will allow users to live stream directly from their mobile device. The feature seems to be designed to complement the IRL channel since at the moment, it would require streamers to stay in their home to broadcast. The new feature for Twitch’s mobile app will enable streamers to go through their daily lives, be it at home sitting on their beds or if they are outside. The new mobile broadcasting feature will allow streamers a greater flexibility by allowing them to stream more easily from different locations without requiring a high-quality computer and audio setup.
