According to its authors, yogurt might help protect us against the dangerous byproducts of gut bacteria. It’s not a secret that inflammation plays a very important role in many diseases, like eczema and psoriasis. However, not many people know that it’s part of some not-so-obvious conditions like Alzheimer’s disease or even diabetes. When it comes to mental illnesses like schizophrenia and depression, inflammation might also be important.
However, before you start worrying too much, it’s important to mention that in fact, inflammation is not a bad thing. Its main role is to protect the body itself by being the first defense line of our innate immune system. Problems arise when the inflammation goes on for too long. Basically, that’s when the body attacks itself. And while there are a lot of anti-inflammatories available for people to buy, taking them for too long is not a good idea. This is why experts have been trying to come up with some natural treatments for this issue.
Yogurt might work against inflammation
Over the past few years, some experts have insisted that dairy products are the perfect natural anti-inflammatories. Others have claimed that they’re actually the opposite. So, Brad Bolling, an assistant professor of food science and the study’s leader, set out on a journey to find the answer to this riddle. He realized that fermented dairy might actually be one of the best natural solutions against inflammation.
It seems that yogurt reduces inflammation by strengthening the intestinal lining. This way, gut bacteria cannot penetrate it, cross into the bloodstream and trigger inflammation. Finally, it seems that eating about 8 ounces of yogurt, preferably low-fat, might be very beneficial for the health. Apart from fighting against inflammation, it can decrease the risk of metabolic and cardiovascular disease.
