A medical trial that was testing a bowel disease drug has failed. The medical trial was done by Galapagos and proved to be safe and it was tolerated well, according to a pharmaceutical research company. Unfortunately, during the medical trail, the researchers noticed that it wasn’t very efficient.
According to Galapagos, the program that tried to find a treatment for bowel disease will soon be stopped. During the trial, the patients who suffered from ulcerative colitis were separated into two different groups. One group was treated with placebo and the other one was treated with the experimental drug called GLPG1205. Both of the groups had the same results, so even though the drug didn’t have any side effects, it proved to be pretty much useless. More details about the drug research will be published later this year and it remains unclear whether the drug will be used for other purposes or not.
The drug was supposed to help the people who suffer from ulcerative colitis, which is more known as inflammatory bowel disease. IBD can cause sores in the digestive tract and ulcers that can lost a very long time. The disease affects the rectum and the lining of the large intestines. Unfortunately, the people who suffer from ulcerative colitis can end up dead because the disease can sometimes be fatal. Until today, no cure has been found for this disease and that’s why a lot of people hoped that this medical trial would prove to be successful, so that lives could be saved or made easier to live.
The treatments available currently on the market for ulcerative colitis cannot cure the patients, but their symptoms can be decreased. The most common symptoms of the disease include frequent diarrhea that can contain blood or pus, the need of the patient to empty the bowels frequently and pain in the abdomen. The life quality of a lot of people who suffer from this disease can be affected. Each person has different symptoms, which depend on how much the rectum or the colon are inflamed.
Sometimes, the people who suffer from this disease go through remission, during which they do not experience any symptoms. The remission phase can vary from weeks to months. Some patients go through phases when their symptoms are mild, but unfortunately a lot of those times they are followed by flare ups of the disease.
As the medical trial that was testing a bowel disease drug has failed, people who suffer from this untreatable disease hope that the improvement of this drug or a brand new drug will make life easier for them.
