BlackBerry was once a force to be reckoned with the in the business phone market. However, the company hasn’t been as successful as they hoped in the smartphone era, and not because of their lack of trying. The company’s instantly recognizable QWERTY keyboard was not implemented in the latest device.
However, after signing a long-term licensing deal with TCL, a Chinese tech firm wich bought the mobile division of Alcatel, BlackBerry will only release lease their brand name to the devices manufactured by TCL. The two companies have collaborated for a while now, as TLC handles the hardware part of the smartphone and BlackBerry focuses on their proprietary software, like security and business apps.
The collaboration was already produced and released two smartphones under the BlackBerry brand, the DTEK50, and DTEK. Many expected that the third upcoming device would be called the DTEK70, but all signs point to the fact the BlackBerry has shifted away from that name and line of smartphones.
A TCL executive, more specifically, Steve Cistulli, the President and General Manager of TCL in North America, has posted on Twitter a four-second video of the new BlackBerry smartphone. The video reveals to be almost the same as the rumored BlackBerry Mercury. The device will be officially released during the Consumer Electronic Show 2017, and it will mark a return to the company’s characteristic physical QWERTY keyboard.
Besides revealing the four-second video of the upcoming smartphone, Cistulli also tweeted that the device is “ imPRESSively designed. distinctly different”, emphasizing the PRESS part, which could be an indication of the official name of the smartphone.
If the smartphone teased in the video is the same as the previously leaked BlackBerry Mercury, then the device will feature a 4.5-inch 1920 x 1080 display, despite including a physical QWERTY keyboard. It will also come with 32GB of internal storage, 3 GB of RAM, an 18-mp back camera, and 8-mp front camera. The smartphone will run on Snapdragon SoC 625 or 821, powered by a 3400mAh battery.
More information regarding price and the release date of the QWERTY smartphone will be made available during the Consumer Electronics Show 2017.
