A biotechnology company is currently developing a type of chewing gum capable of detecting several cancer types. Their product should be able to do so by absorbing a specific group of chemical compounds called “volatiles”. Several cancer types are known to release such compounds in the affected person’s saliva.
According to media reports, after being chewed on for some 15 minutes, the gum should be ready for examination. This analysis will then help establish if the chewer presents such volatiles.
Chewing Gum Could Be A Useful And Easy Cancer Detection Tool
Katherine Bazemore stated that chewing gum is a useful tool thanks to its inherent properties. This can be chewed on for quite some time without disintegrating. Bazemore also declared that this very property was the inspiration source for the new product. She is the CEO and president of Volatile Analysis, the company currently developing this special chewing gum.
This new technique may offer a simpler and easier alternative to a regular checkup. However, people would still have to seek specialized medical attention when needed or in cases of uncertainty. The chewing gum product will allegedly be able to detect lung, breast, and pancreatic cancer.
According to Bazemore, a person’s breath is quite a key factor in determining this particular health aspect. She stated as follows:
“Technically, the gum concentrates the volatiles. Each disease has different chemicals that come out through your breath.”
The company reportedly stated that it is still working on its cancer-detecting chewing gum. Currently, the product is said to be in the testing stage. As such, it may also be too early to determine if and how well it would actually work.
Nonetheless, Volatile Analysis is planning on making its gum available by 2018. This product will not be found in local stores. However, the company stated that it will try to offer it in different tasty flavors.
