Apple is making strides in catching up with the competition in the face for developing artificial intelligence. Apple knows that AI will be the base of future technologies. With that in mind, the company has just hired Ruslan Salakhutdinov as the director of the new AI research team.
Apple isn’t letting Samsung get ahead with their recent hiring of the team which developed Siri. In response, Apple has hired one of the leading researchers in the field of artificial intelligence, computer science professor, Dr. Ruslan Salakhutdinov, from the Carnegie Mellon University. He will be fulfilling a new position at Apple, that of director of AI research.
The professor made the announcement on Twitter, expressing his enthusiasm and linked to an open position in his research team. Apple is looking for more experts in the field of machine learning, so feel free to apply if you have what it takes.
In his tweet, the professor also mentioned he will continue his work at the Carnegie University. Previously, he was focused on the fields of neural networks and deep learning. He managed to publish a high number of papers in the last few years on a variety of topics. However, what made Apple interested is his work on the machines understanding of various types of media such recognizing actions in videos or objects in images.
Although the specific details of what the professor’s new position entails are not available as of yet. Some speculate that his latest work on contextual derivatives in a user’s voice input are a sign that he will strive to improve Siri. As such, he will most likely study the context of questions that users ask Apple’s assistant. AI research can help refine Siri’s algorithm by improving the detection of context clues to better understand what people are asking.
In the latest period, Siri has been criticized for its slow evolution, especially so when it’s compared to the new Google Assistant. According to many experts and users, Google’s voice command technology is more functional and sophisticated at the same time. They were able to make the assistant be more friendly or vulnerable, to offer users a more engaging interaction.
What do you think the new AI research direction of tech companies?
