Eating is an activity that each of us performs every day, but in totally different ways. Have you ever analyzed your own eating habits? If not, you should know an app has been created in order to gather evidence of what, when and how much people eat.
The study was made at the Salk Institute by two researchers, Satchidananda Panda and Shubhroz Gill, based on 150 participants over a period of 3 weeks. Its main purpose was to discover how food timing works.
“The study is about developing methods and offers some preliminary insight into what and when people eat,” Panda declares.
The most striking aspects of this research are that a great majority of people spend almost 15 hours a day to eat. By cutting short this number with 4 or 5 hours, the study showed that they can reduce their weight with 3,5%.
Another interesting outcome is that the quantity of ingested calories is that of 25% earlier than the middle of the day and 33% after 6 P.M.
The researches stated out that a fix eating schedule could prevent people from obesity and diseases by avoiding a “metabolic jetlag,” meaning that irregular timing when serving food produces a conflict between the organs and the whole body rhythm.
Those who were part of this research were asked to take a picture of everything they ate or drank, adding them the information of time, date and location. It is quite as much as the Instagram users do, but this time for scientific purposes.
With respect to food habits, it was noticed that the American people consume coffee, tea, and yogurt in the morning; sandwiches and burgers at midday; vegetables and ice cream in the evening.
The people who took part in this research were chosen online or via ads in San Diego. They were aged between 21 and 55 years old and had to be on no diet with at least 6 months before the experiment. Although the app could be downloaded for free, it could be accessed only by people signing a consent form.
