Exploding Kittens is now number one on the App Store. The game launched for iOS will be available for Android as well soon, and costs only $1.99. Only one day after it was launched, the card game that was changed into a mobile game has managed to top the list of the paid apps. The game will be free to download for a limited period of time though.
The physical version of the game is the most funded game in the history of Kickstarter and it is the game who had the most individual donors ever. More than 200,000 people backed the game and they managed to raise $8.8 million until 19 February 2015. The creators of the game were Elan Lee, Shane Small from Microsoft and Matthew Inman, who is The Oatmeal founder.
The Exploding Kittens game has been described as a highly strategic game and it was compared to the Russian Roulettes but with kittens. The players have to draw cards until the Exploding Kitten card appears, which will knock out the person who drew the card. The Exploding Kitten cards can be defused with some special cards like catnip sandwiches cards and belly rubs cards. The players can also attack the other players, skip their turns and relocate the kittens. The cards are filled with explosive ones that can put any player in danger. The art style of the cards resembles the style of The Oatmeal. Part of the game’s fame was caused because Matthew Inman and because of Elan Lee. Elan Lee has a very good reputation in the gaming community and Matthew Inman has a big fan base due to the Oatmeal.
In order to transform the card game into a mobile game, the creators of the game collaborated with the Substantial studio, which is based in Seattle. Even though many people are not familiar with Substantial, they have worked with big names like Amazon, Starbucks, Lexus, Google and Universal. The creators said that their purpose was not to copy the game and put it on a different platform, but to make an improved version of the game that could be mobile friendly and that could appeal to the old fans as well as to the new ones. That being said, the mobile version of the Exploding Kittens is different from the table game. Some cards were taken out and new cards were added. New art, sounds, voices and game mechanics have also been added.
Exploding Kittens is now number one on the App Store and according to the reviews, the game is going to do very good on the new market.
