Listeria is an illness that is developed by people who eat contaminated food. The bacterium that causes this illness is Listeria monocytogenes. Reports have shown that more than 1,500 people get listeria every year in the US. Almost 250 of them are fatal.
Despite the fact that listeria can be treated, there are some people that might be more sensitive to it. For instance, pregnant women, children, older people, and those with weak immune system are more affected by listeria when compared to healthy young people. This is why listeria can sometimes be fatal.
