Mars is a planet that has been studied a lot lately. Due to the fact that this planet is very popular among researchers, many of them are conducting odd studies. A new study, for instance, shows that we can grow potatoes on Mars. Yes, you can now quit your job and go live on Mars.
This study shows that it is possible to grow potatoes in an environment similar to the one on Mars. Although growing potatoes is not one of our daily routines, it could be if we move to Mars. The scientists wanted to see in which environment they can grow potatoes. The research revealed that they are resistant and can be cultivated in extreme conditions.
Scientists were helped by the International Potato Center (yes, there is one) to create a Mars-like environment. A CubSat was designed by engineers from the University of Engineering and Technology in Lima. This box managed to recreate an environment similar to the one on Mars. It has the same day-night patterns as the Red Planet.
The CubSat mimics the air pressure, atmospheric composition, and temperature that are on that planet. The researchers mentioned that the crops that resist under these conditions can survive on Mars. They mentioned that they want to know just how much these crops can resist.
After the potatoes were put in the box, the scientists observed that they were growing well, without any problems. This experiment showed scientists that some crops are very resistant. The study also showed that growing potatoes can be an easy job, even when the conditions are not ideal for the crops. This means that some plants, like animals, adapt very well to different conditions.
Growing potatoes in hard conditions is not a first for researchers. A team of scientists engineered potatoes to grow during drought conditions and in salty soils.
